Anyone else obsessively log their rides? Reading that Cav does 50,000km a year blew me away. In January, I set the goal of doing 15,000km on the bike this year. I passed the target on the way home today. As of today, I'm on 15,010km, made mostly of commuting, but also 1952km of audaxing. It was done on

Aravis Supertourist 11,951.5km

Bakfiets Cargotrike (for lugging kids and shopping around on Saturdays) 1230.9km

Specialized Tricross fixed - 1199.4km

Circe Helios Tandem - 628.3km including a 112km audax with the middle one. And yes, those are sandals. I was on holiday!

Not quite 3,000 miles for me, all ridden on an Ulegra equipped Merida Road-Race HFS 905. Just need to find the time and the weather so I can squeeze in the last 100 miles before the New Year rolls around again. Over optimistic target for the year was 5,000 miles, but the harsh winter and some injuries put paid to that idea. I adjusted my target down to 3,000 quite early on, as soon as my physio OK'd getting back on the bike, and since then I've had a really good year as far as riding has gone. If I can break the magic 3,000 miles for the calendar year it will be a great way to end. Since I really got back into riding with a vengeance it'll be the highest annual mileage I've recorded, and when I say recorded, I really mean it - I've gone more than a little OCD about keeping a diary of ALL my riding this year, with notes on times/distances/speeds, as well as road and weather conditions and route info. If I could afford one, I'd splash out on a GPS unit, but I'm saving for a decent front light, and then a new MTB so I can get back on the trails. Virtually all of my miles are munched in the pure pursuit of riding for the sake of enjoying being out on the bike, with a hefty percentage completed at night.

Cav doesn't do 50k a year. End of.

I've probably done around 7000-8000 miles this year, I have changed speedo a couple of times, and I don't really keep too much of a track on it, as it is almost a totally pointless stat, but its interesting to see how the miles go up and how much harder or easier it is to cope with the load.

Maybe the total mileage is totally pointless for YOUR riding style, ie: if you are training for a specific event, or to compete, and quality training miles are the means to the end which you seek, but for some of us (ME) the total miles is the only tally that we can, and really want, to keep. I cycle for the love of riding, so my miles are not the means to an end, they ARE the end, the only stat that counts. I do not posses a 'smartphone', nor a GPS unit (although I would like one) with which to analyse my climbing or descending percentages, I have no wish to measure my VO2, my Watts, or to record my max heartrate. All I want to do is ride my bike as much and as quickly as I can manage whilst still being able to FULLY ENJOY the experience of the wildlife, the changing seasons, and the varying conditions this country constantly throws at us. I record my mileage and the conditions in which I rode only in order to compare my performance against myself, and to feel good about it when (if) I achieve a new PB over a given route, or I can achieve a new record distance ridden in a single day. To each his own, but IMHO it is far from pointless to discuss total mileage. Whichever form of riding we undertake, 'distance/time = average speed' is as good a basis for comparing your experiences with those of others as any other data.

What makes you say that? It's a well known fact that pros do that kind of distance every year including races.

I remember talking to Rocksteadyeddie about it and we came to the following conslusion :

The Tour is, what 3500km - so about 2200 miles and takes 3 and a bit weeks. So he'd have to average the same distance as an average TDF week every week of the year including his month off. Doesn't sound very likely, or even sensible to me.

"It's such a hard sport. It's so frustrating because we work so hard. I ride 50,000km a year. I train and less than half of that is racing so I have to do the rest training to make sure I'm good for those races."

I am not an exercise physiologist, so I can't (be arsed to) provide evidence for the value of base miles. However (and I am very aware this sounds nobby) on my most recent 600km audax (over the brecons and back), I was described as the strongest rider by both the a previous audax UK points champion and the previous audax uk altitude award winner, despite living in the fens and never ever doing interval training. Base miles do do something, even if it's only to let you eat like a gannet and drink like a fish whilst having a bmi of 19.

I still don't think he does 82 miles EVERY day of the year.

I'm aiming for 4,000 miles this calendar year, a target I set in about September when I realised it was a possibility. I'm saving the 32 I've got left to do until after Christmas. Mostly on my trusty Felt Z5, some on the BMC.

Before we congratulate ourselves too much consider the 75,000 covered by Tommy Goodwin in 1939...

I'll have covered more miles on my bike than in my car this yeareek

No he probably does more !! Contador was quoted as the same sort of miles, don't forget the good old tour de france is run at a different pace to possibly the base miles he may ride over a day as opposed to race pace, look at the surrey cycle classic they had findished 140k in a bit over 3 hours so what's to say they don't do a similar distance but at a more relaxed pace to keep within a particular heart rate range ?

Probably about 15-20,000 miles for me. 80-85% road, the remainder off-road.

Having not done a great deal beyond commuting this year it's more 'nibbled' than 'munched' - somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 at a guess. Must try harder in 2012.

Only around 2000ish but run a few hundred miles, swum a fair distance (all open water).

Yep - I do the odd triathlon once in a while! Also race 10k distance, mostly off road.

Can't say as I don't have a computer on the bike.

Averaged 14 hours a week every week for the last 8 months, about 10 hours a week for the previous 4 months to that all ridden at a "want to get racing pace".

Can count the days on one hand that I haven't ridden this year.

It's alot of miles.

Would have thought Cav had done more than he is saying actually.
