Just had someone email me a link to this video. Staggering braking. Are the brakes on the 4.0 the same size as on the standard 3.8?

Hi there

If anyone is feeling generous or Santa is listening please get me a 4.0 GT3 RS for XMAS. biggrin
Though a 997 GT3 would do. biggrin

On topic not sure if the GT3 RS has larger brakes or if they are ceramic as standard, but having ceramics on my 911 I can tell you that from high speeds they just seem way more powerful and capable compared to steel brakes, but there again on a Carrera upgrading from Steels to Ceramics gives a huge difference, larger calipers, bigger disc etc.

Gosh, that car won't be easy to get a Porsche warrantee on! What rev range was that?

Probably just range 1. It's an RS not a Carrera! smile

Daz, pretty sure the 4.0 has the same brake setup as the 3.8. Steels as standard, CC brakes are/were an option.

Yes thats correct, same as 3.8. Chris Harris's car has the steel setup.

Probably 1 or 2 maximum, which represents zero issues with warranty.

Porsche are happy with ignitions in range 1-3.

Range 4 if recent they will do testing, if over 100hrs ago are fine.

Range 5 is at discretion of Porsche, again dependent how many hours ago.

Range 6 if the car has not exploded your lucky, but I believe this is a strick NO from Porsche.

Just guessing, but as the 4.0 has bigger tyres front and back, that this would play a part in the braking peformance?
And, indeed, Wowzers.

These are the rpm ranges for a gen-1 997 Carrera

Range 1: 7300-7500rpm
Range 2: 7500-7700
Range 3: 7700-7900
Range 4: 7900-8400
Range 5: 8400-9500
Range 6: 9500-11000

They will be much higher on the GT3 RS 4.0 off course. smile

Not any kind of range - to register a range 1 on a 997 GT3 you need a mechanical over rev in excess of 9000rpm. For a GT3, the video is perfectly fine - it is just shifting as it gets to the limiter.

The 4.0RS has the same brakes as the other 997.2 GT3s. And no - the ceramics are not materially any more powerful than the 380mm steels on those cars. The Supercup cars run Ceramics for marketing reasons, but all of the other racing cars use steels... The RS versions should stop slightly quicker from high speed as they have more rubber and much more drag than the non-RS versions (and the 4.0 has more drag than the 3.8 to provide its greater downforce).

Is it a case of little mechanical sympathy or just plenty of money!!!

Wow that is seriously impressive, guys who gives a crap about mechanical sympathy this is a test to show how capable the car is. I really doubt that anything else with a licence plate would get close to that...

I don't understand this statement. This is a GT3 with an engine designed to rev to 9000rpm that has a limiter at 8500. Given that I didn't hear any gears being ground there and that you could reasonably assume that it had been warmed up first, what it the issue? If it were a PDK Turbo and someone just planted the loud pedal until it hit VMax it would be no different.
