Transferring a Registration
Discussion
I have a plate on my car, that although nothing particularly special, is probably worth a few quid. If i try and sell it does anyone know the process? and how I would get a replacement. I'm guessing a replacement would have to be from the same year (otherwise a Q plate?)
Does my car have to have a valid mot to sell the plate? similarly must the donor reg car or can I transfer the reg from a scrapped vehicle from the same year?
By the way the reg a "B, 911, Letter, letter letter" plate.

Just go to www.dvla.gov.uk and search for "forms" - you need a V317 to either transfer it to another car (£80) or retain it for a year (another £25 on top = £125 up front, but you have then pre-paid the fee to put it on another car in future).
The car does need an MOT, but not tax (provided it was registered to you before the tax ran out or was cashed in, and that was within the last 12 months.
The DVLA will usually re-allocate whatever age-related registration was previously on it, or a new age-related one if the plate you're taking off has been on it from new.
If you want to sell the plate there's no need to take it off the car beforehand (unless you're getting rid of the car).
Keep a copy of the V5C registration document (aka logbook) before sending it off with the V317 form.

If a car has a private plate on already and is being sold, can the buyer and seller go to DVLA together, for the following:
1) put the existing plate onto retention;
2) register the new owner details;
3) put a new cherished plate onto the car from a retention cert;
?
What plate then goes onto the car? The existing cherished pate that is oming off has to stay on the car Neil the new V5 coes in the post, right?

the dvla will issue the car with the orig plate it was registered with. if no plate has been issued (if the car has had a cherrished plate from new) they will issue one related to its year of manufacture*
- they have been known to f
k this up & issue with a new plate, though it happens rarely
Personally I'd get the plate taken off the car onto a retention certificate and with the new V5 issued before starting the selling process.
If you are selling/part-exing to a dealer you trust then they can probably take care of it, but selling privately its just more manageable to have it all ready.
It took 4 weeks for one of our cars to get sorted out thsi year (normally its a week to get the new plate and anoter week to get the new V5).

straightaway? The DVLA will take a couple of weeks to issue new documents right?
And if it takes that long, the new V5 will show the new plate from retention that was assigned at the same time as the new owner.
What happens in between that time? What plate should be on the car?
Will the original DVLA plate and documents be issued on the day in the DVLA local office?
I guess some people do put the new plate on in any case, whilst the paperwork is being processed in those couple of weeks...

For the DVLA to remove a plate from a vehicle it takes approx 2 weeks, the new V5 will then follow but they quote up to 4 weeks (it can be quicker but no guarrantees)
In the meentime the vehicle has to retain the plate untill you get a letter from the dvla authorising you to change it with a new tax disc also supplied at the same time.
If you have a number on retention or cert of entitlement the local office will put that on your vehicle striaght away
