I've suffered AR for as long as I can remember. In the early days I used to just brush it off as the aftermath of eating spicy food, this later became 'maybe it was all that beer'.

About 10 years ago I consulted my GP and he prescribed me Omeprazole and life carried on totally reflux-less. But I missed a repeat prescription, got complacent, lazy, drunk, etc.

Last week I read about oesophagus problems and thought about how 20+ years of mine being scorched by my own acid must be impacting...

I guess I should really be finding out why I'm getting these volcanoes erupt... if it means a camera down my throat, so be it, but is it white bread? Possible - I notice this does kick things off. Sometimes minced meat will too. Not so much on ale or lager (although the gout loved it). I used to think that orange juice would start the explosions and so, stayed away from most fresh juices, but I think that might be down to taste more than anything... (I love fruit and fruit juices, but something about OJ just didn't allow my taste buds to feel at ease with it).

Anyone suffer the hellish problem of AR?

I suffer with it too frown

I was prescribed Lansoprazole, which worked perfectly. It was like heaven! However, like you I thought I could manage without... I couldn't.

I've had pretty much no voice for about 4 weeks now, so I called for a repeat prescription this morning. Hopefully it'll clear things up over Christmas.

As for food, I think with me it tends to be garlic and onions. I drink Coke a lot too which doesn't help. Have you tried having a glass of milk after a meal? That tends to keep it at bay.

Yes, and it's invariably stress related for me. The only other thing that sets it off majorly is excessive consumption of vodka!

Conversely for me though, the only thing guaranteed to settle my stomach and end a bout of reflux is a spicy curry!

Curry isn't so much of a problem, but sometimes a keema might start it off.

But when I do get AR, Gaviscon will work for about 5-10 mins... a thick milk shake will too for a brief period, but no match for the haseeeeeeeeeeeed!

The only two OTC remedies that I've found remotely useful are the chewable rennies, and good old andrews salt mixed at fairly high concentrations, drunk by the pint.

Last saturday I overdid the vodka, must have drunk 4 pints of salts on the sunday and the reflux was still evident wednesday.

I too am worried about long term damage to my oesophagus, as I understand it there is increased risk of cancer of the oesophagus for people who have long term AR problems.

I am thankful to say that the stressful situations that triggered my AR are now largely behind me, plus I no longer smoke, so I just have to be more careful when on the sauce!

I suffered from AR and was put on omeprazole after seeing a consultant.

Then I dropped gluten grains (especially wheat), added sugar and poly-unsaturated fatty acids from my diet. Haven't needed antacids for 2 years now and had no reflux.

I used to get dreadful reflux, used to really make me feel ill. I've cured mine by occasionally drinking cider vinegar as the symptoms arise (I drink it neat but diluted is just as good). Reflux is actually a lack of acids not excess acid as I understand, its sounds counter intuitive but it worked for me

I've had AR for 20 years and have used lansprazole and omaprazole to control it.when I have forgotten to take the daily tablet I can get severe pains but Im fairly disciplined nowadays.

I find that in the last 12 months or so I have not suffered as bad when Ive forgotten to take the tablets as Ive been back at the gym a couple of times a week and this seems to have helped.

My doctor was concerned about the length of time I have been on medication so sent me for the camera down my throat a few months ago.i thought it would be about the diameter of household electrical wire but it turned out to be like an industrial hosepipe and brought tears to my eyes I can tell you.

Once the camera was down it was confirmed that I had suffered no scarring or damage to the osophegus? which put my mind at rest.
