Engine strip & overhaul
Discussion
This won't be untill the 'winter lay-up', but I am going to do my homework first.
But, I PLAN to strip the V8 in my 4.3 Griff and clean/bore/hone/gas flow the heads and bore, and have the crank polished, new cam, followers, etc. Basically getting every last bit of bhp out of the standard block and have it running the way it should do. But NOT paying a fortune to have someone else do it, and knowing that EVERYTHING was done.......and properly.
Has anyone here done the same to their rover V8? If so, what are the major things to look out for?
I HAVE stripped everything up as far as the heads in the wedge I had (4 yrs ago), just to clean everything and get it looking as good as the exterior. But nothing as far as taking valves out, honing, etc.
Once everything is done, is putting it all back together and setting up the timing for crank/cam and pistons a no no unless you are an engineer? I will be camcording it step by step, as a reference guide.
Steve, would be interested to hear what you think. Probably tell me to leave it well alone
Cheers

The Rover lump is not that complex, so why not? If you have the tools and the space to do it, not to mention the time, it is very satisfying to build up an engine, and short of paying a fortune as you say, its the only way to be sure everything has been done right.
However, to do a really good balance job on the crank would, I'd have thought, require a fully assembled crank/rod/piston set so the whole can be balanced, so you might not get to assemble as much of it as you think!
