I had a thought today, no doubt a thought common to many PH'ers over the years.

Driving along in my 4 seat BMW, I noticed 3 people waiting at a bus stop, I thought, if I stopped and picked them up there would be no need for the bus.

In fact, if every car driver picked up people at bus stops (except of course they wouldn't be bus stops anymore, they'd be 'people starts') there would be no need for the bi smelly buses and their bus lanes.

Result!

Maybe it's just Birmingham but there are some people it worried me to share a bus with, never mind my own car.

I think most BMW drivers dont think like that, its a nice idea but when you get an incontinent nutjob you may change your mind.

How do you know they're going where you want to go? Or do you plan that people are dropped off randomly and have to hope to meet someone that takes them closer and closer to their destination?

Besides, I don't want to listen to some stranger talking at me while I'm driving (probably saying things like how we need to be more green or students are going to find universities expensive or there are no opportunities for black youths). I'd rather listen to music.

TBH more people should be using public transport... like the guy who potters along at 25mph because he's getting on a bit (ie the road ahead is empty and it's a 30 zone) or the salesman who is swerving all over the road because he's on a business call or the mum who is talking to her children in the back seat.

OK you go ahead and stop at random bus stops asking people if they want a lift. 1 of 3 things will happen.

1. You'll be killed to death by some nutter
2. You'll be mugged at knife point and the mugger will then have your house keys so will use your car to steal all your nice gadgets and pets
3. You'll be arrested and locked up for a very long time

I agree, except I think the new Boris Routemaster is awesome and I hope they start using them outside London.

So, you will be happy to pick up the bloke that I regularly saw on my bus home from College, who stumbled on, fell over a bit, sat on an old womans knee, fell over some more, stumbled off, and fell into the pub just so you don't have to see a bus again?
