When you've got one fun car, and one dull car, how do multicar policys stack up?

I'll finally be moving in with my other half soon, and quite by chance, it turns out both are car insurances are due on the same day in feb!

Seems like a good opportunity to bundle our policys together, hopefully save a few bob - but are multicar policys worth it, particularly if one car is a bit spicey?

With both of us being petrol heads, we're hoping to reconfigure our car ownership so we have one fun weekend car (s2000 is currently topping the list), and we'll keep my dullard mpg munching hatch for her to commute to work in.

There must be quite a few on PH, who have one fun car, and one 'everyday' car- what are peoples experiences with multicar policys? What other companies are worth checking out, other than the highly ranked naval officer?

They're st, or at least the one's I've tried to get quotes on.

I have 2 cars and typically got quotes of about £1000 for both cars rolleyes which is crap given my usual premium is a shade under £300.

I found A-Plan to be excellent and they just gave me a single car quote to run parallel with my other policy. However they mirrored my NCB so was able to insure my 2nd car for £450.

I got a quote from Admiral Multicar for my two pretty average cars - one driver only, so only one driven on the road at a time - and their quote was just over £100 more expensive than insuring both cars separately.

The savings appear to be imaginary marketing hype

Get quotes and find out for yourself. As with all insurance questions, the answer is : it depends.

My gf and I had 4 cars, including my Tuscan, on an Admiral multi car policy last year and it was about 400 quid cheaper than the best combination I could get on the cars individually.

I've changed it round a bit this year as we got rid of one car and my Tuscan has gone over 10 years old so it's now on a classic policy. I've left my Touareg and our smart Roadster on the multicar with Admiral though as again it was cheaper than individual policies.

I think you need a couple of named drivers on >2 cars to get much benefit.

I'd say not. Me and my wife had one with a well known multi car insurance company, and they wanted to charge her nearly £900 this year for her 2004 Passat, living in a low risk postcode with 10 years no claims. So we took her car off, get it insured for half the price, and they put an additional £200 load on my premium (sorry, they removed the 'multi car discount').

Try Liverpool Victoria not a multicar policy but you get 15% of each policy

For me yes and the service through Hagerty is impeccable. The key wasn't the classic cars, but the cost of insuring the daily drivers. Effectively, I saved 50% by consolidating all the cars.

Its completely subjective. We have 4 cars on a multicar policy and it saves us around £1k a year, but we have 2 young(ish) drivers and fairly standard cars.

I found Admiral's multicar policy much cheaper than any thing else I could find. Last 2 years with them has seen the renewal drop each time which amazes me when I keep reading the stories about rising premiums.
The reason I went to them originally was my old insurer refusing to mirror my NCB onto the Z4 when I bought it.

Currently paying about £530 for a BMW z4 3.0i and an octavia TDI estate. 31 years old with a good NCB.
I like having one set of paperwork/docs to worry about each year too.

Only odd thing was they wanted an extra £100 to add my girlfriend to the policy when I was renewing. She is 32, with a clean license and full no claims. I thought she would have lowered the premium so I told them to poke it.

They got nowhere near what I managed on two separate policies.

Z4 Coupe & Clio Williams = £800
Multicar = £1,450

My fleet costs me a grand a year. Agreed value on The Contessa too, which is important.

Admiral bumped our renewal premium right up this year. Rang them to negotiate but they would only drop £100 and refused to price match.

The upshot was that we went elsewhere...and discovered that although Admiral will allow multiple drivers to accrue their own individual no claims bonus, no other company recognises NCB accrued by named drivers on an Admiral Multicar policy! Not a problem while you're with Admiral but you might have an unpleasant surprise when you leave them, particularly if you've been with them a few years.

Yes, it's in the small print but certainly isn't something they like to shout about.

Was with Admiral but 1 call to Adrian Flux reduced the cost by nearly £400 for both cars (Equity Red Star). Maybe sometimes the multicar is better for some. For me it wasn't though frown

Err I think you'll find that's the same with all insurers, also it's down to the insurer you're going too whether to accept it or not.
It has nothing to do with the previous insurer, in fact an insurer doesn't even have to accept the policyholders NCB.

We have an X5 4.4, a smart car, a 1.6 Nissan Primera and a 1.2 Clio. On cover are me, the mrs, 21yr old son and 18yr old daughter. Costs me/us about £2k a year all fully comp with sensible excess. This is with Admiral Multicar. I dont think thats so bad. Inside the M25 too.

I insure my track car with ERS and my main car with Admiral. Cheaper than multi-car was ever going to be
