New system or new bits?
Discussion
About 1990 I got onto Hi-fi, bought Roksan Xerxes with Tabriz-zi arm, then the king seemed to be the Linn Sondek but I much preferred the Roksan. With it I bought a Naim 140 and Naim 70 to which I have added a Naim Hi-Cap. I also have a Arcam Alpha CD player which I will be replacing, I think it has given up the ghost. I have Rega R5 speakers to go with this lot.
Thing is, the system has been mothballed now for a couple of years but I now want to get it up and running again. There is a chap at work who is very heavy into his hi-fi and suggests I look at valve amps as a starter, also he tells me cables make a big difference. He gives me his hi-fi mags which, when I read through but just confuses me,I read about DACs, phono stages and network players etc, do I need 'em?
What I would say is, the Roksan looks dated compared to something like Mitchell and Acoustic Signature which I think both look great but....you see my dilemma. I also do want to buy a DAB tuner, got one in my car and love the additional stations.
I listen to all sorts of music, from jazz, jazz funk, soul, reggae to chilled, electronic and classical, no pop or power ballad type stuff.
I would not say money is no object but I would not be looking to spend say, ten grand on a CD player from Germany as the bloke in my office did!!
Any opinions, ideas would be very much appreciated.

My first suggestion is put your current system back into operation first. Listen to it and decide if you like the sound. Only then consider upgrading.
Before my hearing went my rule for hifi was listen, listen, listen. Only buy what you like the sound of.
There are a couple of threads regarding the cobblers discussed in the "hifi" world. Well worth a search.

Around that time I had a Linn LP12 / Ittok / Grace F9E that I sold in favour of the Xerxes - there was no doubt it was a better deck. I'd look at losing the Naim amps, personally (saying that as someone who's been through them all from Nait to 52 / Supercap).
Cables will make a difference - an XLO signature phono lead for example could be somewhere to start....
