Evo 8 - 9 Thoughts and costs whats it like to live with

Right now im really digging the Evos(the 8 and the 9) and I am thinking to invest in one. However ive searched around on the net and found that it is a pain in the butt to live with as you have to service it every 4,500 miles and that it only takes higher octane fuels blah blah blah.... Could any one point me in the right direction wether to get one or not . thanks

Depends what you want, point A-B on a twisty bumpy Norfolk B-Road I doubt anything could have been much quicker than my Evo 9 MRFQ-360 HKS, including my current 911 GT3RS. Amazing ability, but you also get a lot of negative attention, from chavs and the police. Fuel economy poor as u would expect and interior low rate. Had mine for nine months. Glad I did the 'Evo thing' but wouldnt do it again. Hope that helps!

Isn't the 4,500 mile service just an oil+filter change?

Lovely cars and know a little about them from my days of scooby ownership. I looked at a few EVO8's as a possible weekend car and decided against buying one for following reasons:

Chavvy image on a lot of them and was difficult to find a nice "plain" black 360 at the time.
Dreadful overall MPG even compared to my old RB5WR which was modded under the bonnet somewhat.
Pathetically small fuel tank
Required servicing every 4500 miles due to active yaw control system and a few other technical bits and pieces that keep these tarmac missiles on the road
They were very popular with the "break in an steal the keys" style of car thief

The above is only my personal opinion and if you like the cars and can stomach the running costs (I wouldn't touch one without a full service history from a dealer and/or recognised specialist) then dive in and scratch your itch

Can you give examples of the fuel economy of your Evo, never had one (too old) just nosey.

I had a 5 for three yrs and an 8mr for two years.I wouldn't say they cost any more to run than any else of similar price/performance etc.I have had a BMW E46 M3 vert for the past four yrs now and would say running costs are pretty similar overall though parts for the M3 are more expensive.

I had mine serviced by a local well known specialist:engine oil,gearbox,diffs,AYC all fluids changed every 4500 miles for around £320.This might seem a bit overkill but other than consumables i never had a problem with either.
Mitsubishi dealers will be a lot more expensive and probably not as familiar with the cars as a good independant specialist.

Its a good idea to run any of them on super unleaded import or not and i got around 20mpg town driving and 30ish motorway miles,same as the M3.

Other than that great cars in every way. The 8mr and the 9s are the ones to go for.Just do it,you will probably love it,and if you dont you you can always sell it.

I had a standard Evo 7 in silver. Loved it, it was the lowest HP one but was still a missile...MPG 17 ish round town about 20 mixed IIRC...sold it to a guy who had his front door caved in at 245 am as they burgled his house for the keys.

A friend owns an IX FQ360. He's only 23 so insurance is £4000, tax is £460 a year and official MPG is 13! Tyres dont last long either and as said servicing is every 4500 miles. But they are made to make brisk progress across ground, if you can put up with the costs, you'll have great fun in one.

Averaged low teens, never more than 18 even on long runs.

I did 18000 miles in a 6 a few years ago when my commute was 20 miles of b roads. Averaged 17mpg but the quickest point to point car (outside of m ways) I've ever had.

costs aren't too bad but the biggest issue I find is that its difficult to own.

going to the pub with mates, going out for dinner with the girlfriend, cinema etc etc all mean leaving your car out at night in a random place and this is the hardest thing not knowing if you're going to come back to a car!

do you leave it on your night at drive, will you wake up to a gun in your mouth

plus there are other times such as being followed home etc that can put you off

not saying it happens to everyone and perhaps this is over the top but this, imho, is the biggest consideration and you(I) do think about it

I know a few people that have collectively experienced all of the above, depends on where you live really.
