2 cars, 10k budget

Hi new to PH and pretty new to cars,
I have around 10k (including tax and insurance) to spend and want to find 2 cars,
The first car should be some sort of hatch, quite nippy and in decent condition and has to fit baby/child seat, ideally low milage and reliable - currently thinking civic type r fn2.
The second car would be something to mod and turn into a road legal/ track day/fun weekend car, not fussed about age or too bothered about condition, obviously the cheaper this is the more I could spend prepping it etc. As I said new to cars but know my way around engines and looking at this as a fun project. Currently thinking civic again EP3 this time, or golf gti.
Need to be able to buy both within the budget and ideally have cash left, all suggestions welcome,

I want both cars to come in cheaper than 10k, and I don't want 1 car to do the whole lot for a few reasons,
1. I want a sensible modern car in decent nick and with a good safety rating for a daily run about, ferrying wife, kid, doing shopping. Don't want something too mad or aggressive for this but still want a bit of poke when I put my foot down.
2. The second car I want is as a project car, to turn into a decent track car that I can keep road legal. I want to do as much work as I can myself on this and enjoy the actual build as much as the driving. I have the ability (mechanical engineer with 10 years experience and have built/worked on a few motorbikes in my time) and space to do this and know the people with the tools I need.
3. If I get a half decent car with the full 10k and want to prep it as a track weapon I would have to pull it off the road for at least a few weeks to do the work myself and with a young family, and living in a small village 10 miles from the nearest supermarket we need a car all the time so a second car for this makes more sense to me.

Sounds sensible to me.
A focus of some sort works well for the day to day vehicle, perhaps a 6 cylinder BMW
3 series of some sort too? You'd get a nice e46 330 for around 5-6k I would have thought.
The rest, say 3-4k could go on either an Mx5 or maybe an Mr2 turbo? Both nice and easy to mod in their respective ways.
If you went with the mx5, you could buy a tidy one for 1-1.5k then enjoy supercharging or turbocharging it yourself with the rest of the cash or, if you'd rather, you could get one that had already had the FI treatment.

Another option would be to to keep my 12 year old 1.2 fiesta and swap the engine out for a bigger one with new clutch and gear box to suit, new wheels, brakes and stripped interior, Not sure if this would be any easier or cheaper though to be honest.

And much faster. MX5's are over-rated in my opinion, although a supercharged engine might make a difference.DC2 is a good call too, although I can't say it makes a good family car. Maybe that as the track day car.
FN2 is a bit of a disappointment compared to other Type R hondas.
I've heard the fn2 is a bit of a let down compared to the other ctr's but it has the isofix points for child seat and a big boot, so its more practicle for me than the others. I like the styling too which is important to me if its going to be my daily run around and I haven't had any suggestions so far that would suit me better I think.
Looking at the dc2's, about the same price as s2000's and another I hadn't considered but I think one of these and an fn2 would be seriously pushing my budget.
