Problems with getting optical connection working

Hi
I am trying to connect my Virgin V HD box to my Technics mini hi fi system so I can play TV through the speakers. Have connected cable to optical out on system then to V HD box selected EXT on hi fi but no sound. I did try to connect PS3 to this but could not get that to work either..... any ideas ?

Check your connections, should be input not out on the hifi system.
Also worth checking the V box settings incase you have to select the type of output you wish to use.

Or even digital - co ax
digital- optical

My old amp does this

Just checked my V box settings and no option to select audio output. I know you need to select it on the ps3 though. This means your problem is likely to be the system input/settings at fault.

Thanks guys.....seems my hi fi has only got digital out.
