Everyone has a standard widescreen these days 16:9? So why are movies now being broadcast in some wider format so I now have to watch them through a letterbox. Paid lots of money for a 50inch plasma and 1/3 of the screen is missing. t

It's 21:9 aka Cinemascope I believe.
There's various ones, I think Cinemascope just seems to be the one that most people remember. Even with a 22:9 screen (approx 2.40:1) there are still some films that use a wider aspect still, such as Ben Hur. This is a 2.70:1 aspect ratio, so even on a 'scope
screen there will be black bars.jains15 said:

There have been numerous and differing widescreen formats since the dawn of widescreen in the 1950s -
Cinemascope
VistaVision
Cinerama
Panavision
Even modern widescreen TVs can't cope with all the permutations.
Don't forget supermarionation Cinemascope
VistaVision
Cinerama
Panavision
Even modern widescreen TVs can't cope with all the permutations.
