I've only owned an sl55 but my guess is that running costs will be very similar, expect 15mpg for city driving, later models (i.e 04/05) have fewer electrical niggles and have uprated command system so a good idea, if things go wrong then parts for these cars can be expensive,
with regards to engine mods I would suggest the sl600 is the better bet as stock it has much more torque. Also being a twin-turbo - a simple remap can result in very high bhp/torque gains. The sl55 will require pulley changes, etc and in my opinion would be more risky as there is more to go wrong if that makes sense, the larger dispalcement sl600 seems more capable of handling the extra power,
above all, good luck!

Considering one of these monsters as my next DD...
Can someone tell me the running cost differences of these cars, including servicing, parts and mpg. Im looking at cars around 2004/2005 vintage.
Thanks guys
P.S some under bonnet fettling will undoubtedly be taking place.
I run a modified SL600 which I bought new in late 03. In general use mpg ranges between 16 and 22mpg.Can someone tell me the running cost differences of these cars, including servicing, parts and mpg. Im looking at cars around 2004/2005 vintage.

Servicing is variable but with a limit of 2 years [for higher mileage cars every 10-12k].
I use MB Stoke and every 2 years it costs me £250-£400 for servicing and at 60k or 4 years 24 new plugs and bits, not a cheap job.
Upgrade Wise the simplest route is Kleemann ECU which will give 650ish bhp and a good exhaust with 200 cell cats will add another 50bhp, consider leaving out most of the silencing if you like it aggressive. More powerful inter-cooler pumps are a good idea although larger inter-cooler rads would be best but you will have to change the front bumper like Brabus do.
LSD is a good addition and not to expensive. Front discs and pads are £285+fitting.

Benzito, not sure of the evidence of electrical gremlins between years of manufacture - feel free to provide some if you can (interesting if true).
Also displacement is roughly the same between SL55 and SL600 (5.5). SL 65 has a 6.0.
Hi sorry yes thats correct, the engine displacement in the sl55 and sl600 are indeed the same but the torque figures are I would say significantly different. As mentioned above, the sl65 would be a fantastic combination of amg styling along with ridiculous power. I'm surprised the prices have fallen so much this year for the sl65 - maybe due to time of year though, 34k sounds very appealing! Also displacement is roughly the same between SL55 and SL600 (5.5). Personally I'd go for a SL60 AMG. >_Does everything the SL600 does and more._<?
Please enlighten me.Mark.

The 60 is faster and handles better. Service costs are also lower. MB muddied the stats so that the 600 would not look "inferior". All this is fairly common knowledge. Does that help?
Interesting, do you have any performance figures to confirm that. Or, power output and weight.I have spent some £1600 [plus discs and pads] on servicing with MBenze in 8 years that pretty cheap isn't it?
Mark.

Google is your friend, try wiki or MBClub UK, or Mercedes-Benz Owners forum...like I said, it really is common knowledge. I have spent some £1600 [plus discs and pads] on servicing with MBenze in 8 years that pretty cheap isn't it?

Ahhh I see, you are comparing it with a 129SL600, not a 230Biturbo.
Mark.
I'm comparing the SL600 (129) with the SL60 AMG (129).Mark.
The 600 is a V12 and the 60 a V8 bored out 500 breathed on by AMG.
We on the same page now?
The naming convention was changed on the R129 during its life-cycle...
During 1993 (with the launch of the W202 C Class), MB naming convention was changed from displacement before class to class before displacement. i.e: 300/500/600SL to SL300/500/600.
It has stayed like the latter on the R230 (class of car before engine displacement, although the numbers very rarely match up to engine displacement now).
