I knew you could often get cheaper quotes than you'd expect with some cars aimed at an older demographic but this takes the piss...

I'm 23, 3 years I've had my licence, 2 years NCB and I paid about £960 for the year on my 330Ci. Got a quote on an XJR (newer shape, 400bhp model) for £930.

£930 for a 400bhp motor at 23?!

For comparison, the same details with an e39 M5 had the cheapest quote at a shade under £2200.

Are there any other 'super saloons' that can provide surprisingly cheap premiums that you've come across?

Some insurers offered decent prices on T5 Volvos for me when I was young and looking for one. Sadly, the one I wanted (S60 T5) seemed to attract a fairly stiff premium. But if performance is critical, then looking at a hot Volvo or Saab is never a bad idea.

I was looking at jaaags. This is great news.

However there is a good reason. Who would crash a jag whilst doing doughnuts in asda's carpark at 3am?

This true, I just wasn't expecting such a massive difference between that and the M5.

I'd presume S Type Rs would also be relatively cheap.

The diference being not in the power but the people who drive these cars, and the fact you might want to push an M5 to its limits whearas in the jag you want to relax and listen to classic fm.

Hence less claims on the jags.

I've got an old man car but I still pay a lot for it. However I'm 19 and only had named driver bonus, so I would be paying a lot for any car. I suspect the fact the type of car I have is common for taxi drivers and was common in fleets doesn't help.

No idea. Always had excellent quotes from them (Admiral)

I've been with them from day one and have had a good ten or so cars insured in that time. The notable cars being an ibiza cupra and 206 gti 180 at 18, an S4 at 19 then i bought my RS4 4 days before my 21st.
I don't think i've ever had an insurance quote above £1400 since i've been with them.
My first ever car ( a 1.6 fiesta) came in at around £1100 fully comp.

Back when I was 23 & had my 4.0 XJ V8 it was cheaper to insure than my MX5 (Around £750 for the XJ)...Was sheer comedy having them both on the drive then mixing which one I took to work hehe

Not really answering your question, but for laughs I compared new/current model vs old for a few cars, and much to my surprise they were the same or less to insure than the older. Statistically then, younger folk in newer cars mustn't crash as much as they do in older ones. rolleyes

edit: oh bks. Trust me to wait till half an hour later before hitting the submit button to find a gazillion posts already ahead.

This is without a doubt the way to go - hence why I bought myself a mk3 Ford Mondeo just after my 18th birthday!

Now got an ST24 at 19 and paying £800 a year biggrin

Volvo T5s are cheap to insure, but I have found Saabs (besides the 2.0T) to be silly money! £2000 for a 95 3.0TID!

Well you can't crash a car if it is being fixed all the time.

I know a young lad. He's 18 doing lessons, but was trying Insurance quotes for the usual small hatchbacks when he passes.

Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING came back at under £6K for 3rd party only. I tried skipping every insurance extra, we tried everything from a 1.4 Polo to 1.1 Fiesta to a 1.0 Metro to even desperation a 2CV! Adding a parent as a named driver (with 18yo as the main) as well made no odds.

It's a fking disgrace. It's actually encouraging him to drive without insurance! Or for him to do some fronting on his parents insurance! I accept that being young is hard work, and they have to wonder how much damage you can do rather than the car itself. But I'd like ANY insurance company to justify that! rolleyes

On the subject of fronting, what actually qualifies at fronting?

Theoretically, if a bloke was living with his mum, got insured on her car, and he was down as the named driver as it was cheaper, and they both used it regularly, would that be fronting?

Or would it only reaaaaally be fronting if he lived away from home and bought the car himself but put it in her name and her as main driver?
