Seasons greetings to all...

So i'm thinking of booking a little break for me and the OH, Trip Advisor, Expedia and Thomas Cook, all very mixed reviews on hotels. I'm not really too sure where to stay, been looking for hotels around the Colosseum/Roman Forum area, and a couple of hotels seem to fit the bill. Hotel Latinum and Cinemusic Hotel are 2 that have caught my eye.

Can I get anymore recommendations please?

I've got a budget of around 250-300pp for 4 nights, looking between Monday 13th and Friday 17th Feb.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Buy a Roma Pass from one of the tabac/kisoks, unlimited travel and entry to two main attractions.

My tip (I don't do sightseeing tours, prefer to walk around and see what I feel like) - if you are going to the Colosseum, go next door to the Roman Forum and buy your ticket there. It gives you access to the Forum and the Colosseum, and avoids the huge queues at the Colosseum.

From our experience, the Forum was better than the Colosseum anyway - we spent about 45 mins at the Colosseum (and half of that was probably due to thinking "we're supposed to be enjoying this") and around 3-4 hours at the Forum. You can get a really nice shot of you in front of the Colosseum from in there too smile

Been to Rome many times, one of my favourite cities.

Whereabouts are you staying?

To be honest, just buy a guide book and have a read on the way over. Rome is a pretty small city and all the main tourist attractions are in close proximity, no need to get excursions, just walk it. Have a look at the size of the city on Google maps if you don't believe me.

To eat, I would recommend the Trastevere district on the other side of the river. Good nightlife and lots of "local" restaurants which don't charge tourist prices.

Not mentioned in many of the guide books but try to visit the Capuchin Crypt - fascinating.

If there is anything you particularly want to know email me through my profile.

We were there in the summer and had a great time. I agree with the others - it is easy enough to walk everywhere and definitely go to the forum to get your Colosseum ticket saved us loads of time. One place I would recommending people avoid would be the Sistine chapel, I was not impressed with it and was really packed.

I am sure you will enjoy. Probably my favourite city...

we stayed in the Residence Palazzo Al Velabro, trip advisor was reasonably accurate - I did post on there.
Excellent location, Check out their website. Note: some rooms still require updating but still good enough.
Great coffee/bar within about 300mtres backing onto Pallatine Hill and overlooking the Circu Maximus (Bar75) free tapas late afternoon/early evening.
Head into the Trasteve area for loads of restaurants - all budgets from cheap to not so cheap

Thanks for the replies. We go 3 weeks today woohoo and very excited. We're just starting to have a look at booking a few tours. When you mention the forum, isn't there last of sub forums, or is this just relevant to the Colosseum?

We will be going to Sistine chapel and Vatican city for the tour there, do you knw if there are any days where they are closed to the public?

Thanks

We went 3 months ago second time ive been its not a very big city you will see more on foot than on the sighseeing tours thats if you like a walk. Our typical day would be wander around for 2 hours stop and have lunch and a glass of wine wander around for another 2 hours seeing sights visiting attractions etc.. we ticked off a great deal in the 4 days we were there and probably walked 5 - 10 km a day.

One thing we did thats not in tourist guides is go into churches, any church just pop your head in and take a look we visited maybe 3 of these a day they may look a bit bland from the outside but inside they are very impressive and ofcourse free to go into.

Expect to que for 2-3 hours for the vatican I wouldn't do that again to be honest there is plenty of stuff to see in the rest of the city.

As said above food is good everywhere ive never eaten so much pasta in my life and if your on foot some of the nicest places you will come across down little side streets.

Make sure you take a guidebook.
