Gt3 rs and a gtr?
Discussion
I am currently running 2 cars. A vw rocky r for everyday plus a mk2 gt3 rs for wk ends and the occasional track day.
Trouble is I use the rs far more than the rocky as its so much better to drive. With good value gtr's out there I'm considering swapping the rocky for a gtr. Making the perfect daily car and the pork a bit of fun on the side.
My question to you lot is will the pork still feel special if I'm honing around in a gtr everyday? Are they different enough? Anyone run both and what would you say are the main differences? Looking to hear from those with experience as I understand the theoretical analogue vs digital debate etc.
On holiday out the country at the moment have a bit of time top dear this but have not yet driven the gtr.

Don't worry, they are very different cars. A very good friend did the same a year ago. Initially He was smitten with the GTR. I drove it and was very impressed. Excellent road car. A year on, he rarely drives it, preferring a BMW 4wd instead and I believe that he's selling it. The RS on the other hand, he tells me that he would absolutely never consider selling.
The sheer capability on the road in all weathers of the GTR is its strongpoint. The RS is different in that it is far more visceral, offers a high potential of performance but relies entirely on the driver to provide it. He says that driving the GTR was ideal as it did a lot of the work for you allowing you to relax. The RS is a more demanding drive which constantly engages him making it in his eyes far more special.
Ultimately, i think that the convenience of the GTR has turned to blandness for him hence the decision to sell it. As I say, you shouldn't worry, I doubt that the addition of a GTR will diminish your love for the RS.

I had a GTR and a 996 GT3RS together. I have had the GT3 for 8 years. I kept the GTR only 9 months and 7,000 miles. I used the GTR alongside an X6 to make a pair of daily drivers.
The GTR was an amazing car. However for daily use it was too hard over speed humps, potholes and London roads. The gearbox was a bit snatchy at low speeds and the interior was of poor quality. I was able to sell for a good price and I decided to get out. Another year and another 10,000 miles would have cost me £2k in tyres, £2.5k in service, £400 road tax and about £10k in depreciation. It didn't stack up.
The GT3 RS is only a weekend car but it satisfies in a way that the GTR never could.

GTR is an awesome car. Very, very quick and surprisingly agile for such a large car. I couldn't have one as a daily driver though. I found it impossible to drive slowly. If I had one, I'd be at serious risk of losing my licence but maybe your restraint is better than mine
Have fun on the test drive but my advice would be to try and drive it slowly at some point and see if you can. It's very good at the high speed, rocket ship thing!

I've driven a GTR and (owned)GT3.2. Both have utterly different characters to each other that imho they would make a for a perfect stable. GTR is a blindingly quick everyday, go everywhere weapon, whereas the RS is more of a 'special event' car. I also see the GTR as a 'scratch that itch' car - it's one of them cars that if you get the chance to own one...
Why i didn't buy one? Well, i couldn't stomach the running costs AND more important (to me) was, living in Nottingham, my nearest HPC is Cambridge (supposed to be crap), and the next is Middlehurst - over 2 hours drive, and also read on the GTR forums of people receiving their cars back from the HPC (via transporter) with damage. I think some of the southern HPC's (Bournemouth etc) are supposed to be a little better? With the GTR needing 2 services a year, i couldn't be arsed with the above. If i wanted a FAST point and squirt weapon, i'd buy the 911 turbo with it's 2 year servicing.
That said though, i am starting to itch again now the 2011 (530hp) models have a 12 month servicing schedule. At least you only have to put up with the HPC's once a year!
Drove the new C63 Coupe the other day. Not a patch on the GTR for pace, but WoW what a well composed car for everyday driving. Fast enough, sounds EPIC, feels solid, first rate build quality, looks great, and more importantly feels special to drive. Only niggle is the gearbox is not in the same league as say a GTR, or PDK or possibly DCT.
If you can put aside the running costs and Nissan general attitude and service... GTR is ace!

In your shoes I'd have an M3 or C63AMG as my daily driver. AMG engine sounds like Thor gargling petrol. And new MCT is loads better than the old torque converter which was s
t and let down the rest of the car. M3 needs to be spanked to get the best out of it but is also nice to drive at relatively low speed. Sounds awesome at 8300RPM too!
In my view GTR is too much of a PITA for daily driving, the comments about it being uncomfortable mooching around are true - IMHO its also really designed as a weekend warrior but it's still a great car though!

Ha ha, id challenge any GTR driver to a 10 lapper on the Brands GP cuircuit in my 996RS. feeling lucky?
I'm pro Pork too but durability and interaction aside in a straight and with a novice on track the GTR would easily do better. When I had the trackday at Bedford the GTR was eating all the Porsches without sweat.woppum said:

Swap the rocky for a GTR, enjoy it, get it out of your system, then swap the GTR for a clean 996RS which you can keep forever and which is the real deal in the terms tha you mention imo (analogue & special). Soon after, sell the mk2 GT3 and replace it with something properly everyday like a 997tt or a cayenne Turbo.Trouble is I use the rs far more than the rocky as its so much better to drive. Ah so many GTR related threads at once are amusing!
If you look into GTR ownership properly and can use an independent like Litchfields for servicing, tuning, updating and extended warranty then it becomes a different proposition imho. I am sticking with my 09 GTR personally, but its not the car for everyone of course
Feel free to drop me a PM if you need any help.
let us know how you get on.
