Does anybody here read 'The Economist' and care enough to pass comment on the publication?

I've taken an opportunity to subscribe for very, very low cost and wonder what to expect.
All I know is that it supposedly covers 'World politics, Business & finance, Economics, Science & technology and Culture'.

I'm a subscriber, makes for a good read on the commute and there are always some supplementary articles which are pretty interesting.

It's usually a fairly large publication with quite a lot of articles - I usually don't finish an issue completely before the next one arrives.

I always try and grab it when I'm on an airline where they provide reading material, as it can pass the time. Usually very well written and thoughtful, although coming from the CEO mindset.

It's an excellent news and business publication. If I only had time to read one thing each week to keep me up to date and explain news and business i'd chose The Economist. They cover a wide range of global subject matter and different issues. Many of my American friends subscribe after coming to the UK and reading it.

Per the above comments, I subscribe and enjoy reading it. The online content is good as well. Can generally keep me occupied for a week until the next issue appears.

As my job is about developing future services in my industry I find it useful. My boss gives me his copy after he has finished reading it; I think it is interesting and well written. Yes it is all from a business perspective but as a result the crap is practically zilch.

I like reading the FT because of that too, however I was amused by my boss asking me if I was playing the latest Star Wars MMO hehe (because it was on the front page of the FT in an article about the comparison with Warcraft and the amount of cash the games industry is generating in comparison with films). He is about as far from a gamer as you could imagine. smile

It's a good read as said above, gives a good overview of stories and new concepts that if your sad like me you can go read up on further, a subscription would be lovely but I make do with a tatty copy having been passed down several times from the boss

+1 Ive subscribed for year and years. Good in depth info on a lot of stuff not just economics and finance, they also have a tech quarterly which is interesting and the science section is also usually pretty good.

That being said, some inaccuracies and invalid theories are punted around, but whats new.

FWIW It was influenced by MI6 according to released papers discussed in "The Hidden Hand". A book about covert ops during the cold war. So it has a positive western spin... as you would expect.

I am a subscriber too and quite enjoy the read as a fairly reliable source.

Although as you say some of the theories thrown around definitely have an agenda, but primarily it is one of the most accurate reads.

I have read it on occasion and have really wanted to enjoy it, but have never been able to get into it.

I am not sure why. Maybe I know too many financial journalists in the real world which prejudices my view.

I will try again in the new year.

I have a subscription. It's brilliant, but I never open the magazine. I read and more importantly listen to it on the ipad and iPhone. They do a WEEKLY audio edition which is a word for word reading of the entire magazine by actors. It's fantastic and has replaced the radio for me.

I tend to find the articles and anlalysis are generally about a week to two weeks ahead of the newspaper counterparts. The analysis is gently opinionated but also consistent. What I like about it most is it's news without the stabbing, raping and other hateful st that fills the newspapers.

To read The Economist it takes me the same time it takes to drink a good 80s vintage of claret from a decanter in the bath.

Fantastic publication, taken to reading it online rather than buying the magazine.

Thank you very much for your thoughts. It seems that, on the whole, it is something I can look forward to trying out. smile

I subscribed for 10 years or so and agree that generally it is a fine newspaper. Whilst the issues it covers are generally highbrow, the writing style is simple and accessible. Unfortunately uncritical acceptance of "Dangerous Climate Change" and repetition of MMGW propaganda under the current editor means that I don't get it weekly anymore.

The environment coverage took a turn for the worse once Matt Ridley left.

It's a great read, covers all the big topics of the week plus it offers a very concise precis of many world events, that you might otherwise not be aware of.

I've subscribed for about 10 years now and read every copy. Very informative and it gives you a lot more news than you'll get anywhere else. It does tend to have a pro-EU outlook and is supportive of MMGW but that wouldn't stop me reading it and it's a small part of the publication, unlike New Scientist which did lose my patronage when I couldn't take any more.
