If the sound stops when you press the pedal it doesn't sound to me like the release bearing. Normally when the release bearing is dry or worn it makes a noise when you press the clutch pedal. I have never replaced a clutch on a TVR but from an experience I had when replacing a clutch on a Lotus, it sounds like the spigot bearing on the end of the gearbox shaft, and if it is it would be a gearbox out job. The only other thing I can think of, possibly adjustment. Maybe the release bearing rattles when released and the clutch lever needs to be adjusted. I hope this helps.

Hi Mike,

We have just had the same on a 350i that Hotty and I bought. Noisy and rattly until the clutch was pressed.

When we dropped the clutch the spings on the clutch plate were very very loose and rattled when you shook it, now replaced.

So possibly not all doom and gloom.

Cheers

Shaun

Changed a clutch on a seac by lifting and shunting engine forward to its max, also removed gearbox on my 350 using same method, bit of a struggle as I remember but do-able.

A noise in neutral with the clutch engaged is likely to be gearbox bearings; try checking/changing the gearbox oil before you take it all apart! My car has a noise like this, I found the main tailshaft nut on the gearbox was not tight, I haven't got it running again yet so I can't say if that's fixed the problem though.

Interesting post.................my 450 'squeaks' when i press the clutch pedal down.

Is this the release bearing and is it a 'box out job to fix?

If i leave it could it cause problems or can i just live with the noise?

Probably just needs the pedal pivot lubricating.

[quote=JMF894]Interesting post.................my 450 'squeaks' when i press the clutch pedal down.

When you press the pedal and it 'squeaks' is the engine on or off?, is it a continuous 'squeak or just the motion of the pedal? because my 400 se also 'squeaks' when I press the pedal down but only when the engine is off and its not continuous. If its just the pressing motion squeak then that's normal because mines always been like that. However if it squeaks continually when the engine is running it could be the release bearing.

It only squeaks when i press the pedal down and regardless of whether the engine is running or not...................

I'd go with dry/ rusty release bearing, but wouldn't recommend spraying anything in there as you'll almost certainly get it on the flywheel and/or clutch plate. If you can hear it as a sort of rustling noise that disappears if you just take the play out of the pedal, that'll almost certainly be it.

I should say it squeaks 'AS' i press the clutch pedal down. It is definately something to do with the pedal action.

I have no noise as i sit with the car in neutral and engine running.

Sounds like my car then. I had the whole pedal assembly out when I modified the box to take the cruise control cutoff switches. Cleaned, greased, reassembled... and the bloody squeak is still there rolleyes
It might be the slave cylinder piston sliding in its bore that causes it.
