I have a 2002 mondeo. Its just one of those cars that normally just works, and passes its MOT every year.

3 times past few weeks though its failed to start. Each time its exactly the same, the car turns over, fires, then immediately dies. Every attempted start is the same from that point on. After about 20-30 attempts over 15 minutes it will fire up and drives like nothing is wrong.

You can't use the throttle to catch it and keep it running. If you keep the car cranking after it fires, the engine still dies.

Once the car is running it drives fine, its only an issue getting the car to run.

The only recent work done on the car was replacement of the coil pack and leads, to cure a missfire.

An engine stopping a short while after starting is often a fuel problem. How much is in the tank and how long ago was the fuel filter last replaced?
It could also be the immobiliser cutting in.
Are there any warning lights coming up?

I had a similar problem on an Alfa years ago, that was the crankshaft sensor.
It went open (?) circuit when it warmed up, but was fine when cold.

Is the tank pump running? Running for a few seconds sounds like it is using the remaining pressurised fuel in the system then running out. Check the fuel pump fuse(s).

Even better: http://www.jack-frost.co.uk/mondeo_gaffer_tape.htm...

A whole website dedicated to the phenomenon.

Fuel tank is half full, fuel filter was replaced about 2 years ago.

No warning lights

One of the times it happened we called out our recovery service, and they said probably dodgy key as it started with the spare key. Today it was both keys.

Sorry can't help as I never got mine fixed but I had MK2 1.8 that did something similar, except that would die with a loud pop coming from the exhaust.

Would it even fire if it was the immobiliser? I do have a dead key from when i bought the car, I'll try and start it with that tomorrow, and see if the car fires.

It certainly feels like the immobiliser, as the car runs perfectly well when it does start. When we have the problem its like someone turns off the ignition a second after the car fires. There is no rough idle or misfires, it just shuts off frown .

It can't be the fuses as once it does run, it will run perfectly well for about a week.

Sorry, I was unclear. Remove the fuse and check the connections. I have had experience (admittedly in a 20 year old car) of damp getting into the fusebox and oxidising the fuse terminals. This inevitably happened after it had been parked overnight and condensation got on it. It never cut out once it was running for some reason.

Another possibility is an intermittent connection on the inertia cutout switch.

When you get into the car and switch the ignition to position II, you should hear the pump prime itself with a faint ZZzzzzzzzt sound before you crank the engine. If not, then the pump isn't getting power.

I know diesels have a coded lift pump which will refuse to work if the immobiliser isn't deactivated, I suppose it is possible that the petrol does that too, but I'd be surprised if the engine management even allowed you to crank it let alone actually fire it up.
