Replacing a Cannon 450D

I've to replace a friends 450D and have to replace it with the same model or current equivalent. I see the numbers now are 550 or similar D. What is the one I need to buy , and where. Thanks in advance, I'm in a difficult situation but have a couple of months to do so. And do they come with a lens from say Currys/ Dixons or elsewhers ?

Can you not just claim off your household insurance and save you the hassle?
450d if you can find it is around £440 with basic kit.
What exactly was stolen?
Not much and its going to be somewhere between £500 and £700, bag and other stuff and it can easily start to reach £900+

Pretty sure it would have come with an 18-55IS. Certainly mine did. That's now been replaced with the 18-55IS Mk2, but that's pretty much exactly the same thing. The 18-55 without the IS is not the same, though. It's cheaper and not as good.The 3 digit Canon cameras are all equivalent replacements for each other. Each new model tends to be 50 bigger than the previous (so 400D was replaced by 450D, then 500D, 550D and now 600D). They tend to keep at least 2 on sale at once, charging more for the newer one. So when I bought my 450D, I could have paid more for a 500D which was newer. Once the 550D came out, they stopped making the 450D and the 500D became the base one. All of those came with the 18-55IS lens.
The 1000D, 1100D family is cheaper and not as good.
The 40D, 50D, 60D family is more expensive and better.

Seems very civilized to just replace it and not do insurance or offer to pay the guys insurance renewal as it would be cheaper,I have known friendships disappear over a lot less than who is at fault of scum stealing camera equipment.

The 450 or 500 when launched, came with an IS lens in kit form, but 9 or so months down the line, it became a s
tty non-IS version packaged.
So if replacing from ebay, make sure it's the IS one you're getting.
As there's plenty 450s floating about in good condition/barely used, I'd just replace what he had.
There's no real justification for upgrading him to a 500/550/600, unless it's the same price (highly doubtful, bar a cheap 500).

Well the 450d isnt a current camera so you cant buy it new.Which leaves the guy at a point of buying a used one. Which isnt IMO a fair deal considering. Insurance would buy you a new replacement of whatever is equivalent now.

It's a 3 year old camera, therefore the owner should only expect the same or monetary value, which he can add to, to fund a newer version.
