Hi all,

Due to a change of work location, I am now able to claim company car allowance.

My current car, Subaru Impreza WRX fails on 2 parts for claiming the allowance.

It doesn't meet the policy on emissions that the company has, and it falls short on the MPG for me to break even on my fuel claims. As soon as it is sold I will be looking for a diesel replacement.

I have decided for now to spend the funds I get from the Subaru sale on an X-Type Jag and pocket the car allowance to create a decent deposit on a newer car in 12months time.

Budget is going to be about £4000 - £4500max on an X-Type Diesel.

What do I need to be wary of?
Anything I need to look for apart from the obvious when buying a used car?
Is it a cam belt if so what mileage does it need changing at?

Thanks in advance.

James

Hi James,

I bought a 2.0d Sport 16 months ago, with 126,000 miles for £4000 & it has now done 161,000 miles. I love the car, and people don't believe it has done the mileage, it looks so good! It is gunmetal grey (not sure of the colour) and is has a good spec including climate control, cruise control, electric & heated leather seats, electric sunroof, heated screen/mirrors, headlamp wash, traction control, electric windows x 4, excellent CD/radio, boot spoiler & more.

When I first bought the car, it developed several, what I now recognise, as common faults! The actuator motor on the turbo packed in which should mean a new turbo, but I found someone who can replace the motor, so £200 as against £750, the rubber hose from the EGR to the intercooler split, the bottom pulley was rattling away (sounds like the air-con compressor), the wiring to the MAF valve, and the valve itself. All common faults which can mount up, but now I have it sorted, I love the car, it is quick, economical, doesn't use an ounce of oil and goes everywhere at 90mph.

I have had every type of car possible, and value for money, looks, economy and more, I can't think of a better place to be, so much so, I want to find a 2.2 Estate around May or June!

If you need any further advice, feel free to PM me & I'll give you my mobile number, and you can call me.

Hope this helps, Howard

P.S. It doesn't have a cambelt!

Personal choice, but the 2.0 is awful. 2.2 is a v nice car, hooked up to the auto. Don't go for a poverty spec car. What you looking to buy next year?

Thanks Ginettajoe, very helpful. Just need to get the subaru sold asap.

From what I have read the 2litre seems a decent car, I ideally want an SE or Sport. But if the right car came up in a lower spec I could be tempted but ideally want leather TBH.

I know the 2.2 would be better but its out of my budget unless monumental miles on it.

As for what will I look for in 12months time, who knows. If the X-Type is going strong I may not change, or I may upgrade to a newer model.

Not sure if it is still a problem, but a while ago, I went for a ride in a friend's x-type and the road noise was horrendous...even having put heavy duty, noise- deadening mats...I had a BMW 528i and it was like a roller in comparison...the noise in the X type would have driven me mad after a while...not sure if that is an issue for you....my 2c worth...

Well I have looked at a couple of Jags, both were ropey.

Then a Saab came up, done a deal on my subaru.

So getting today a 9-3 TID sport.

The standard spec tyres are Pirelli P-Zero Asymetrics which can give a lot of road noise. They never bothered me in my 3.0 but some people swap the Pirellis for something more quiet.

Got to admit the road noise is not brilliant on the X-type, I have a late 2006 3.0 estate sports premium.

The noise is tyre related, however I have bridgestones, and is most noticeable when in drivers seat, feels like the door is not sealed properly (rubbers have been checked), shame as the engine is so smooth. No a deal breaker but defiantly not as insulated up front as some other cars i've driven.
