I know its a weak spot and was kind of expecting it but has anyone actually had one go?

I have been getting the 'transferbox neutral' message for about 6 months but it has not caused any trouble and gearbox felt fine. However, over the last few days i hav has as follows:

HDC Inactive light on startup
Transferbox Neutral message a lot, every time i drive it actually
A very slight transmission judder at very low revs while just ambling along

Then, last night after a 100 mile motorway journey (at speed) i got a lot of bonging, the Low Range light lit up (at c. 90mph) and it went into Trans. Failsafe Prog.

I had no choice but to continue (2 year old and 9 month pregnant wife on board) and after 10 minutes it went away and stayed away.

Today i use it for a 5 mile trip and the Trans Failsafe Prog is lit up pretty constantly and switching the bong between that and Transferbox Neutral. Gears are all over the place, locking in 3rd or 4th, then warning goes away and the car lurches through the gears and back to normalish until it throws another error and goes mental again.

So, has anyone actually had a gearbox go bang? If so is this representative of it about to happen?

Fortunately i have a very good specialist about 200 yards from my house so it can go in there pronto.

Any advice very welcome.

Cheers,

Ben

Also to add...

For the last week or so the car takes about 5 seconds to engag a forward gear when started up from cold. As in, get in, start engine, transmission in D... Then nothing for about 5 seconds, car just rolls backwards like a manual in neutral if foot not on brake...

I'd say these are pretty classic symptoms. You could get the oil tested in the vain hope that an oil change might sort it out, but I think it would be a pretty long shot, I'd say you're in for a rebuild. Probably around £2keek Unlucky, especially at this time of year!

Shame, a lot seem to go just after the gearbox oil is changed, the change seems to either kill or cure!

Unlucky, but if the car is otherwise a keeper, at least you'll have that problem out of the way! rolleyes

Just had it into my specialist - as thought the tranny is FUBARed. Recon box going in, £1800 fitted. I know it is a 'good' deal but stings a bit after Christmas. Oh well, tin boxes huh.

Sounds like a good price. Painful but at least it's another thing off the list. Did you have a little chat about the foldy stuff? Nod nod wink wink? Though I guess you'd want a receipt for warranty.

Might be worth going onto the Fullfat site and just check that what he's doing will cover everything, not a job you want to get done twice, or incomplete!

Ouch but not the worst price ive heard of, as said check on FFRR to make sure your getting everything that needs changed, changed.

If done properly, then you wont need to worry about it for many years now. smile

No real haggling, I'm a good customer of his smile probably dropped 2k with him over the last 12 months on the Td6.

It includes a full flush, checking the transfer box/motor is right too. Anything else I should be expecting?

And yes, it will be a full receipt job!

The wife's RR TD6 tends to judder at lowish revs around 30mph, almost as if the selected gear is too high.

No problems accelerating, smooth gear changes and not a bother starting.

We had a few problems with battery drainage and on another forum it was mentioned that the Transmission Control Unit may need re-programming as it may have been wiped during the drainage ?

Any truth in this or is the transmission on the way out ....?

Afraid to say that the judder on my Td6 was about 500 miles before the gearbox expired.

I've now got a new transmission but need to sort the transfer box. £800 + fitting for that little bd.

Thanks for the reply !
It hasn't had any of the other symptoms you describe and it's been going on for a few thousand miles.

The juddering feels like too higher a gear has been selected, and it only occurs at around 30mph, go past and no bother, stay under and no bother ?

Anyway of diagnosing the fault or is it a case of open the transmission up and having a look ?

No warnings have ever come on ?!

Thanks

Drfrank

Had this exact problem on a TD6, in 2008 on a 2003 car. Needed new gearbox, car obviously out of warranty, but still moaned to LR and they finally agreed to pay 50%. So it's a recognised problem. LR denied it was a known issue, of course.
