Digital recorder, help please.

My DVD recorder/player needs replacing. I don`t buy pre-recorded DVD`s, just record TV/Freeview and was about to buy another online. However, I`ve seen Digital Recorders, are these just boxes with hard drives instead of DVD`s? Given my usage, are these the natural progression, I`m looking at the `TVonics DTR-Z500HD` (my TV is not HD). Thanks for any help.
