MPG....I know it's never going to be great...but...
Discussion
Ok, before I hit you with a number, some factors...
Most of, well all, my driving is urban, to be honest usually no more than 10 miles or so at a time, with a fair bit of stop start....I try not to rag it and do my best to be sensible...
Right....now i've done some man maths and at the minute my 4.0 HC is doing around 13-14 MPG...???!!!!
Now it may just be me but i'm sure she used to do better
She gets up to temp as she should so i assume the "choke" comes off when it should, although when started she does run VERY rich.
Any ideas?
Oh also, fuel guages..is the inaccuracy the guage or sender, as a rule? (note- my MPG has been worked out by filling up and then literally (the shame) running out of juice)

Thats the same as mine does but on a decent run its 24. Smiles of fun. Most of, well all, my driving is urban, to be honest usually no more than 10 miles or so at a time, with a fair bit of stop start....I try not to rag it and do my best to be sensible...

Looks nice but a bit of a hybrid with the 'C' bonnet and the wrong engine.
Make sure you drive it first though 'cos it'll feel really gutless after the Chim.
ETA
Forgot to throw my 2c in that 12-15mpg is about what I'd expect just knocking around town and short journeys.

I know what you mean ,trouble is i`ve been spoilt with my car ,maybe the way to go is to buy a classic "standard" and don`t mess with it and except what it is ..Make sure you drive it first though 'cos it'll feel really gutless after the Chim.

That motor has the Zetec with throttle bodies about 150hp but i surpose it would be a waste of time ..Maybe the way to go is original and 100% standard .

Personally, I wouldn't buy a B with anything other than a B series lump or an RV8 in it...... I've had this weird fantasy recently about buying an early spridget as a run about.... I think they do about 40 mpg, and everything overtakes them. That way I save money AND won't get done for speeding again
Mind you, I've also had a weird fantasy recently about the bird in Kill Bill. No, not the Japanese schoolgirl, the other one...er.. Uma Thurman
Its a bit of a weird one , i think its a waste of time after owning a Chimaera trying to pepp cars up to gain a few HP..Been down that route with the old MG going from 75hp to 115hp at the wheels ..but looking at it now its a joke..
Any classic in the future will be standard with maybe electronic ignition..
Took mine out today, not started it since the beginning of October ,the only way i can describe it is it`s a "wild animal"

I wouldn't pay £2k, never mind nearly £6k, for a butchered MGB personally.
A few 'sensible' (and preferably invisible) upgrades maybe, but that looks a waste of time.
You have the 'wild animal'. A classic MG just isn't about that to my mind.
In any case, it would still feel like a dog compared to your Chim, and you wouldn't even have bragging rights on owning a beautiful original etc...
If you are honest, your original MGB probably supplied as many grins as the Chimaera, they are just of a different kind now

On Topic; On the very rare occasion I have checked it; I get 17-18. Always have.
Driving style/location has seemed to make little/no difference.
Mine is very sensitive to temperature, trip duration and the type of driving (or at least it was on the old engine...)
Doing short trips around town in the dead of winter last year (where the ECU runs on the cold map for longer) it struggled to exceed 15 mpg even driven gently. Blasting around the country lanes was a similar story - 16 mpg on a good day. But cruising at 85 on the Spanish motorways it returned something like 22 or 24 mpg.

I'm going away for new years (Worcester to Lincoln ish) debating whether to take the Chim or the work van....70 odd quid in fuel or 30....
Will small children wave at you? Will old men stop and ask you what it is when filling up? Can you blast away from round abouts and give it a little slide? Will you drive without the radio just to listen to it?
No, take the TVR. Who cares its only money.
...Just a thought gents. When I first got my 4.0HC a few years ago, the fuel consumption was equally rubbish, just like the OP. I replaced the engine tempreture sensor and not only did the engine running improve (sligtly) but the fuel consumption improved by a huge amount.
From memeory, i think the tempreture senor was only £20.00.... I must have saved that amount with my first tank of fuel!
Hope this helps.
