Hi all
My name's Ben, I'm 20 years old and live in Derby!
I currently drive a '98 Audi S4 and I'm looking at buying something cheap & RWD for track use.

I've had a fair few cars in the past 3 years.

£800 fully comp. 2yrs NCB. I paid £3000 for the G40 when I was 18. It helps that my gf is on the policy and that we're cohabiting.

Dunno how you guys get quotes like this, I'm 27 and still paying £600 FC on a 1.6 golf, albeit only 1 years NCB.

My fav is the G40, pocket rocket, pretty rare.

I use elephant/admiral and always put on quite a high voluntary excess.

The G was my favourite aswell. Absolute machine, It's spin up in forth if you wanted it to. In the end the supercharger kept imploding and it had to be broken for spares and scrapped - saddest day of my life!

that is true. Having moved from my parent the price did go down ~20%

Was it the 2.3t?

Really want to pick one up to get some 5 pot action!, can you recall what it's like to drive? And what, if anything, things go wrong/can go wrong?

Excellent selection btw


I got told the 2.4 t is the one to go for, but the extra nearl 50bhp from the 2.3t is too alluring. Why the had so many engine choices baffles me. 2t, 2.3t,2,4 and 2.4t and I think even 2.5/2.5t..... All 5 bangers too

It was brilliant to drive. After I'd fitted an exhaust it sounded amazing! Really is a unique sound! Some people recommend the 2.4 but I think the 2.3 is definately the best engine. Only the 2.3 has the high pressure turbo which gives it the extra power. I had the manual 'box which was really smooth. It was very refined - maybe too refined for what I wanted it for. It was ok on fuel aswell - used to get 25mpg round town and I've got quite a heavy right foot.

Engines are pretty much bomb proof. The only thing to look out for it that after 99/00 they went to fly-by-wire throttles which were common for the Throttle position sensor going. It was built into the throttle body and had to be changed complete. Mine went on it and I was quoted £700 to get it fixed. Supposedly they need coding back up to the ECU. I sold mine as spares or repairs.

They're so cheap at the moment that I was tempted to get another one. If they were RWD I think I would of fixed mine and kept it for a lot longer.

Then again I could also get into things like....e39 540i, 300c, e38 735i, various audi's like your S4. Even petrol pheatons!!! Was looking for a w8 passat... Awful car apparently, but I just want to look at that engine!

I had an S4 at a little older than 20, it wasn't too bad to insure actually. Certainly less than £1,000.

It's amazing how cheap any big engined petrol cars are. Before I got the S4 I was looking at everything! You can easily pick up an S8 for £1500. 4.2 V8 320bhp and double glazing for the same price as a half decent focus.
I suppose it depends what you're after it for. I have had a few barges - including the C70 and my S4 and even though they're quick cars they are nowhere near as fun as my G40 was.

Yep I've heard of MRC. Seem to be a very highly thought of! Prefer to do all the dirty work myself but will no doubt be getting them to remap it. I plan on K04ing it in the summer. All money though!

How did the G40 compare to the Charade? I had a string of Charades, the last one had around 160hp
