Or one like it
Over the holiday ive decided a new daily driver is needed just because I want to - nothing wrong with the Lexus but I was in town today and a midnight blue XJ something with 5 spokes and the latest lights went by and I thought how lovely it looked and wondered in this age of austerity how much one can be - the example above is top $ but i would expect a decent px on the Lex
Guys is the 4.2SC engine any good (had an XFR recently liked the quiet engine disliked the trim / veneer of quality) I would get a 12m warranty but Im aware its a complex car what if anything am i letting myself in for
Whatever I get i want the rear DVD as we are getting 2 children next year and Im told you have to have these things to entertain them
Any informed info really appreciated

It's the 4.0 V8 not the 4.2 V8 that has the tensioners etc problems at around 100,000 miles. The 4.2 has the latest third generatation kit fitted. That's not to say the 4.2 will be problem free in this area!

Yes, that's what I meant.R.
It does seem to be that cars either have a cambelt or they have either tensioner or chain stretching issues. I guess nothing lasts forever and something has to break first, on balance I still reckon chains are a better idea.
Tha aluminium bodied XJs can suffer from paint defects in the form of corrosion around most of the panel edges. Several explanations have been put foreward for this including lacquer that's too thin, dirt trapped between paint and rubber seals and steel particulate contamination from body presses being forced into the aluminium and setting up an electrolytic reaction.
Apparently Jaguar have been awkward in some instances over honouring the warranty blaming the corrosion on untreated stone chips or some other form of paint damage. There have also been reporteed instances of the problem returning soon after repairs have been done - presumably as the underlying fault causing the problem has not been eradicated.
Areas affected include the front edge of the boot lid, bottoms of doors, wings, door/glass seals and wheel arches. The issue has several pages of postings and photographs on the Jaguar forum and was also covered extensively in this month's JEC magazine. I have tried in the past without much success to find out if the problem is year or colour specific.
I have seen two bad examples myself. One - amazingly - was up for sale at a well known secondhand Jaguar dealer which had corrosion on almost every single panel.
Honest John (Daily Telegraph) has more on the X350 in his car by car review. Generally not much else is of concern and all the earlier issues you'll no doubt find if you Google Jaguar V8 such as Nicasil bore errosion, water pump, throttle body and secondary tensioner failure do not apply to the 4.2 engine.
You may want to have the gearbox oil changed - it's a sealed for life unit - if you want it to last and there have been reports of air suspension compressor failure and premature suspension component wear.
IMO a long test drive over poor roads is essential. The air suspension gives a very different ride quality compared to conventional coil sprung Jaguars that is not to my taste at all, especially on larger diameter wheels and lower profile tyres.

They are capable of carrying high mileages if looked after and apart from the aluminium corrosion are quite durable so you could reasonably spend a lot less in the main dealer network and still get a good car.
I'd make sure before purchase the paint warranty is as good as it can be - IIRC Jaguar droppped the requirement for annual bodywork inspections somtime during the X350 production life and I don't know what if any effect that may have had on the potential viability of a future claim.
One other thing you ought to check for is ripples down the sides and orange peel in the paint. Dark colours seem to suffer from both - maybe they all do but darker colours certainly show it more.
Squat down in front and just to one side of the car and run your eyes up and down the sides. Look carefully for any distortions in whatever - another car, a wall or showroom window is reflected by the paint. Do this on both sides front and rear and in good natural light and you'd be quite surprised to see if you do this to several how bad some are.
None of this should put you off 'tho - I'm very, very anal about mechanical condition, paint and bodywork on cars and pick up on stuff most people wouldn't even notice - but best to know and not find rather than not know and find.
Love to know how you're getting two children BTW. I have a couple more you can have if you want...
