York - Fresh Galangal, Turmeric & Thai Basil
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Mods - while this is food related its the physical location of the items which is key!
I know that you can substitute the above for dried versions but keen to try and get the authentic flavours... therefore does anyone know where to buy the following in York?
Fresh Galangal
Fresh Turmeric
Thai Basil
Thanks in advance

Thanks Leigh, i didnt even know that shop existed! I've been down today but they are closed until the new year. Will check them out soon though. I've been all over the place today and failed to get my ingredients - I'll just have to use the substitutes this time.I'm cooking a Yellow Thai Stir fry with Beef, first time i've tried it so hoping its nice. Its a Rick Stein Recipe.
From Wiki (as I wasn't 100% sure)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galangal
"Galangal (galanga, blue ginger, laos) is a rhizome of plants of the genus Alpinia or Kaempferia in the ginger family Zingiberaceae, with culinary and medicinal uses originated from Indonesia.
It is used in various Asian cuisines (for example in Thai and Lao tom yum and tom kha gai soups, Vietnamese Huế cuisine (tre) and throughout Indonesian cuisine, for example, in soto). Though it is related to and resembles ginger, there is little similarity in taste."
Most places say to use Ginger in place of Galangal which makes sense as its part of the ginger family, however, it also says it tastes totally difference - hence wanting to find the right one. Its the same situation for Thai Basil (I failed to find that as well).
I've been to Morrisons, Tesco, Waitrose, two places on Hull road (Freshways & the Chinese Supermarket next door), grocers on Bishopthorpe rd, Chi Yip on Rougier Street and they either didnt stock it or were closed! Fun and games.

Good recommendation that one Leigh, the curry packs are very nice, that said I prefer chi yip as it is a lot cheaper for much larger portions of e.g. galangal (fresh rather than frozen too) and when it hasn't all vanished - big bunches of aromatic king and thai basil, amazing stuff! Plus they have all sorts of mystifying things in there that I have no idea what to do with and tanks with live dinner in as well!Gassing Station | Yorkshire | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
