Time to move on from the current toy car - an Elise R. But what next? Driving pleasure rather than outright performance is the key issue - the Elise isnt the fastest car around but so what, its a brilliant drivers car with nice sensitive controls. So I would like a similar replacement toy and about the only other things I would want is two seats only and a soft top. I cannot persuade myself that a souped up family saloon like an M3 is a sports car even if its way faster than an anything I have ever had. Too many seats and its a tin top. And anyway we have a family 4 seater for shopping etc.

So something that drives well, is not as common as an MX5, two seats and a canvas roof. No particular budget but I would prefer to be below 50k rather than above it. And likely second hand at 12/18 moths old.

The obvious answer is a Porker but brilliant cars as they are, I cannot get excited about one. Too common - every other dentist has one.

morgan 4/4 sport, might suit sir nicely. if you want a bit more go then a plus4 supersport might tick more boxes and is just on your 50k budget.

Folks bang on about the crude chassis (esp compared to the likes of the elise) but my experience with a more than 20 year old version, is that it is hugely communicative, and great fun. Admittedly you need to steer clear of potholes in order to retain your fillings, but apparently the new ones are improved in this area.

If you want a bit more modern, then an Aero 8 maybe another option.

Alternatively you would get plenty of amusing TVR for your budget and still have a sinking fund for emergencies!

Ok, no canvas roof, but a pair of driving goggles makes up for it, shirley?

No way. Ugly as sin in the metal, and one wheel short of a picnic. There was a reason why Morgan moved over to 4 wheels in the first place.

A fast Caterham like an R500, an Atom, or a TVR.

Something like a Corvette Z06? Less of a flick-knife, more of a sledgehammer.

Failing that and if you have a garage: Porsche Boxster Spyder /Cayman R plus a couple of K for a noisy exhaust.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. Most of the ideas proposed are , tbh, ones that I had thought of an discarded which is a depressing illustration of the lack of choice we have these days since the decline of the UK sports car industry. I'll go to the show at the NEC this month and see if there is anything new there - if not, maybe back to a bike?

Not a rag top, but as you seem so keen on the Lotus you currently have have you considered an Evora?

OOI why are you getting rid of the Elise if it suits your requirements so well and you love driving it?

Do you not think that is rather a childish standpoint. You'd rather not own a car you yourself descrive as "brilliant" because of a stereotype?
