Jesus christ!

Just got my copy of MCN and noticed the article about Robbert Gifford. Described as one of the governments top advisers.
Actual title Director of the parliamentary advisesory council for transport safety.

He is against riders taking extra training to improve skills :where is that w*nker smilie:

Said last week in the Times.

“Improving motorcyclists’ skills merely means they kill themselves in a more skilled way.”

prick

So Dick. does that go for Police riders as well? Should you just give them a bike and tell them to get on with it? or just us idiots that probably pay your wages.

It is my opinion that these so called road safety experts cause more people to be killed through there warped ill advised strategies.

Thats if they are not busy getting run over by coaches or pulling out in front of bikes and killing riders.

how many of these peopel are there? it seems to me that they have a shocking safety record these safety advisers.

Another retarded statement on road safety, with no actual basis in fact.

Ok Mr. Road Safety Rocket Scientist, If advanced training is of no benefit then how come insurers offer a discount for it I wonder? I mean it's not like they'd give money away is it ....

Dear Mr Gifford.

I read the following in Motorcycle News and I was somewhat surprised to hear these comments coming from someone allegedly involved in safety.

'Improving motorcyclists skills merely means they kill themselves in a more skilled way,' according to one of the Government's top advisors on transport.
And when MCN contacted Robert Gifford to challenge him he called motorcycles: "Hopelessly dangerous."
Gifford, director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety said he could prove that improving skills makes people more dangerous. His example? "Cars with ABS are involved in as many accidents as cars that aren't."
When MCN suggested ABS isn't so much a skill as a mechanical operation he put the phone down on us.

I hope what I have read is totally untrue and would like to offer you the right to reply.

Firstly, I am sure you wouldn't say that you can "prove that improving skills makes people more dangerous" I trust that you will be persuing Motorcycle News to have this litigious and potentially libellous statement retracted. I will understand that if you choose not to, then maybe you did indeed make the statement. I will draw my own conclusions from your response.

As I understand it we have a system of training in this country where people have to pass a driving test. Indeed, police class one drivers are regarded as the finest in the country. Are you saying you have proof that this training makes them more dangerous? I would be extremely keen to see this proof myself. Would it be possible to let me have a copy?

I await your response. I should mention that the allegation has caused outrage amongst the motorcycling community and this letter has been posted on the internet and your reply or lack of it will also be posted. I await your response at your earliest convenience and certainly no later than 28 days from today.

That do for starters? Feel free to edit/improve at will

Or maybe not, the truth in that statement is scary
Mon Ami Mate said:

Secondly, the amount of pressure that drivers are now under. Many people travel as part of their work and are placed under considerable pressure by their jobs. They need to get from A to B to C as quickly as possible. Despite what this Government believes, for the vast majority of us this immediately disqualifies public transport. Road are getting busier – more people are under pressure. Suddenly then we have a prevailing government ethos that says “lets make life more uncomfortable for road users.” Speed limits are lowered, and drivers find themselves impeded by speed bumps, chicanes, speed cameras and bus lanes. Queues lengthen. Pressure builds. People start to become reckless – taking chances to make a little more progress. All sense of courtesy to other road users is immediately dispelled. People lose respect for laws that they perceive to be unfairly causing them more pressure – as soon as people lose respect for the law chaos ensues.

Some people not being able to afford to live near their work can't help. Hence getting up early, tiredness and a long stressful commute.

Awesome reply overall, covers everything that can be though of. Shows how academics may concentrate on one area but ignore so many more important ones.
