Help, advice and knowledge required.

Just returned from a rather 'more than' spirited blast in the Griff.

Warmed the car properly before the throttle was terrorised and enjoyed a great blast.

On returning to home, I became aware of a tap/bang type noise coming from the engine.

Pulled into drive and got out to inspect.

SYMPTOM: When revving the vehicle and letting the revs drop, there is a rather loud(ish) tapping/banging coming from the central engine region.

PROBLEM: ?

There is plenty of oil and I don't think there was too much prolonged cornering, so I don't think there was any oil surge on the trip.

PLEASE HELP, Im a little concerned to say the least!

I have no clue but just to clarify things for others.

When you say central do you mean the cam area?
Is it possible for a push rod to have come out of line or broken?

What about engine mounts either side of the block. Perhaps the sound is the engine touching/hitting the chassis?

(I only say this because Andy at APM just told me he had changed mine).

Its difficult to tell. It could be an engine vibration touching the chassis as it only appears when the car is at a certain revolution which may cause the same vibration.

Unfortunately, I'm crap at engines and I really don't know where to look.

I've had to put the car away now as I'm packing for my stag weekend in Amsterdam tomorrow.

It just sounds like its gonna be very expensive!

I dread to think and I know my mind will be on the car rather than my weekend.

Have you checked the 'bleedin obvious stuff? Might just be an HT lead come away from a plug... not always easy to tell at a glance. Running on 7 cylinders does sound a bit unusual!

Jon

I have no idea at all mate - although I do hope it's nothing expensive like a push rod failure or whatever.

Really just posting to wish you an absolute riot of a stag weeknd!

Cheers mate!

Mine had a similar issue.

Sounded like someone was tapping on the block with a little metal hammer when I 'blipped' the throttle. Seemed to come from the middle of the engine.

Gradual throttle didn't seem to to do it.

Was the front pulley on the crank (pre serp). Seems that slot that the crank key fits into can elongate. The tapping was the pulley moving on the crank (further elongating the slot)

Cos of the revvy nature of the TVR RV8 it seems that this is not unknown...

From memory a new (or recon, can't remember) balanced one from TVR power was about £80 (+ fitting)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm back in the land of sober after a fantastic trip.

Reality is hard to accept now as I find myself back at work with a poorly Griff sat at home in the garage.

I'll be giving it a good look over tonight now that I've got some pointers as to what it might be.

Cheers.

For anyone who's interested......

I took the car into the workshop and it appears that the problem was intermitant which I find a bit odd.

We decided to change the oil and filter and flush it out.

Seems to have got rid of the problem for now.

Is it possible that there was some 'foreign body' flying around somewhere that may have been causing this problem, or is something more sinister at play?

We had a loud and worrying intermittent clunk from the back of our Griff - local dealer had it on and off the ramp for an hour before discovering the problem - a missing bolt from the top differential support plate.

Does it do it above a certain rev range or only on drop down, When i had a knocking from the central engine area i was told it could be a couple of things either a brocken tappit pad or piston damage turned out to be a cracked piston but mine sounded Diesel like above 3000 rpm

No - It seemed to be worse at lower rev's.

As per normal, when my mechanic came round to the house for a listen, it did'nt do it at the first time of asking.

Turned it off, then started it up again and it started to do it.

As mentioned though, since I've had the oil and filter replaced and a wash through, its not done it since.

Fingers crossed.
