Opposite to the other thread, what engines look a mess? Nothing to do with whether they are good engines or not.

My first nomination is an engine I used to have and is a bit of a nightmare to work on....

Pug/Citroen 1.9 GTI...

Do massive engine covers count towards "worst"?

I was looking for a first car for my girlfriend on Gumtree earlier, and ended up looking at sheds smile

Thought this (Xantia 1.9TD) looked a shambles:

Daimler double six.

One of the 'selling points' was that you couldn't get a half brick in the engine bay and close the bonnet. To show how truly powerful it was - I suppose.

The down side was that a basic service was a 2 full day job.

I find the 205s (1.6 or 1.9) fairly logical to work on. Main bugbear is with the random and unusual sockets and spanners needed. I'll agree they're not pretty but doubt many fuel injected cars of that era would be.

OK, this is relatively pretty, but it's a bh to work on - even changing the plugs is a mission:

And you really don't want to do the cam belt on one of these:

I reckon anything newer than an A-Series engine without an engine cover would be classed as 'messy'

Depends on whose working on it. I know a man that can remove the engine in an hour and a half smile

It's just the fact you have to take half the engine apart to do anything. And as said above, so many hoses!

A varient of the Zafira. Not the worst one for mess, but not particularly good and mind numbingly boring.

Back in my pre 16V days I thought they were pretty good, most of the hosing there is just induction stuff, putting a K&N on it tidies the whole thing up plenty. One of the better cars I've worked on, TBH.

The 306 1.9 Dturbo was a complete ahole, though.
