Drunked pub Mpg question

Hey guys, I need some mathematical assistance please - my mate and i are having a drunken pub dispute and can't come to a resolution!

Is there a way to work out the answer to this question? - Ignoring purchase price and depreciation, if a petrol car does 20mpg and a diesel does 30mpg, and with diesel currently costing 10p more per litre more which car would cost less to run?

Assuming:
10k miles per year
Petrol costs £1.30/litre
Diesel costs £1.40/litre (10p more than petrol)

Total fuel cost per year are:

Petrol: £2955 (@20mpg)
Diesel: £2122 (@30mpg)

(ETA: previous figures were costs over 2 years)

per thousand miles, the diesel will save 83 pounds,

This saving could then be used to power your nissan leaf for over 3 thousand miles.

Don't forget that the diesel car costs more to buy than its petrol equivalent. But then the insurance and tax is cheaper on the diesel car... there are too many variables to answer this properly I think. It changes car to car.

Diesel uses 33% less fuel which costs only 8% more


At £1.30 per litre for petrol versus £1.40 for diesel
Cost per mile is………..Petrol 29.5p………………Diesel 21p
So at all levels of mileage the diesel will be cheaper to run by 28%
What you need to take into account is TAX, deprecation, servicing cost etc
