We have two 8 month old kittens and have had them since they were 12wks old.
They come and go outside as they please but come inside to use their trays, which is annoying as they bloody stink.
They have a tray each and are regularly cleaned but they seem reluctant to do their business outside.
We did try moving the trays towards the back door but one of them pee'd where the tray used to be.
Scattering litter outside to encourage them isn't really ideal as there is a shared green at the back of the house and our garden is quite a bit away from the backdoor.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers.

Yeah, encourage them to keep stting in the tray indoors so your neighbours don't have to deal with the mess in shared areas.

put a tray outside your back door and over the next few weeks move it closer to were you would rather like them to go. just be warned that you will stll have to keep the area clean for them

Due to the shared aspect of your set up it'd be better if they carried on using trays really. Do you have covered trays as these do reduce the odour to some extent.

Great so you don't like the smell of your cats st but you want them stting outside in the shared space instead. What a lovely neighbour you are.

They'd be an outcry if I let my dog outside to st where ever it wanted but because its a cat its apparently acceptable. Why should your neighbours have to put up with your cat st in their areas?

My neighbours looked fairly surprised to find cat st all over their drive the other day. Should have kept a litter tray shouldnt they. Otherwise neighbours who find they have stinky cat st in the flower beds may return it to them.

I forgot to mention, ALL the neighbours that use the shared area have cats.
So it's not a problem. Sorry I wasn't clearer.
I wouldn't like the cats crapping in a neighbours garden.

prepare for the kitties to get seriously duffed up one day soon by the other cats, they will see them as the intruders and let them know who`s boss.
keep the litter trays as they will need them at night unless you fancy the idea of steeping in a pile of s**t first thing in the morning.

My kitten used to use a tray. I then started letting her out, but changed her litter from the small grained stuff to the wooden pellets. I'm guessing she didn't like the new stuff, and started crapping outside.

My cats have nearly always had trays available, for about a yr they didn't (for various reasons) and I just took them away, never had a problem. I can see from your post that you have had an issue with a cat weeing where the tray used to be, I've no easy answer to that. Except maybe put soemthing citrus based near the area.
