When does current-model Cayman production end?
Discussion
Does anyone know?
From what I've seen of the 991 and what I've read about the next Boxster and Cayman, I think I'd prefer to order a last-of-the line 987 Gen 2 Cayman than wait for the new model.
I've got a Gen 1 Cayman that's nearly 6 years old and I've done 63,500 miles in it from new. I still really like it.
Given that I don't want a 911 and I don't think I want the next-generation Cayman, I'm tempted to order a Gen 2 Cayman S, spec it nicely (18"s, manual, PASM, Sport Chrono, LSD, Xenons, assorted fripperies) and keep it forever.
I like the R too, but the S suits my needs better. I'm saving up for an Exige V6 to cater for trackday thrills.
So, when would I need to order it by?

987 Cayman production finishes end Jan 2012. May already be too late to order 1 to your own spec.
Actually this is a good point. Cayman R can no longer be built to order, so although there'll be new cars available for some time yet. For a made to order car it may already be too late? OPC mid Sussex has a few available though. See if they have a spec that suits? You never know?Wow, hadn't realised that production ends almost immediately, thanks guys. I'll see whether anything's available. If not, I'll just keep enjoying my Gen 1 Cayman S.
Shame if the chance to spec a Cayman R to order has already gone - I was wrestling with the idea of one last night, after reading khooni's thread about his soon-to-arrive Aqua Blue car.
Ah well, might just have saved myself from remortgaging!

You are too late mate.
By pure luck, I ordered mine on the very last day spec changes were allowed by Porsche AG in Germany. In fact, I tried to add something the next working day and was told to forget about it. Apparently, the end of cayman production means they have to stop allowing spec changes earlier even though the build is late Jan.

there are quite a few basic spec cars that are well priced in the market at the moment.......if I weren't so picky re the AC, bi-xenons and the pse, I would have gone for it.if you don't care about bi-xenons and AC, then get one of the basic spec ones out there and get carnewal to de-muffle the stock exhaust for a 1/3 the price of a PSE.
like I said. soon the market will realise that it is bargain priced for what is a nearly new rare hardcore porsche

Boo hoo!
Enjoy your R when it arrives!
If you have the means to get a new one now, I'd seriously consider ringing round today and tomorrow.Enjoy your R when it arrives!
December is generally a bad month for car sales and I'm sure that they get manufacturers bonus based on calendar year end sales (if it was me I would do this) so you'd probably get an awesome deal if you can find something you like?

Got me interested now, have you had this done to a porsche exhaust before, will it be any good on a cayman 3.4S, any detrimental effects, what is the cost?khooni said:

I can't imagine it will be hard to find a car with AC. Every single Cayman R I've seen has had AC, bar mine of course. Xenons and PSE seem to be harder to find though - they're both pricey options, but definitely worth having in my opinion.if you don't care about bi-xenons and AC, then get one of the basic spec ones out there and get carnewal to de-muffle the stock exhaust for a 1/3 the price of a PSE.

Of course if you're not planning on doing much night driving you can probably do without the Xenons, but the PSE sounds way too good to pass up!

ha.. I knew you would say that. Of course if you're not planning on doing much night driving you can probably do without the Xenons, but the PSE sounds way too good to pass up!

Bi-xenons come with LED DRLs........ much cooler and doesn't contrast with the LED strip (aux lights). Night driving is better with it and since the CR is supposed to be more of an all-weather fun car, it's a sensible, if a tad expensive, option.
PSE may be hard to find as well. I wouldn't restrict myself to PSE cars only especially when the standard exhaust sounds so good ( and Carnewal can help de-cat 2 of the 4 cats).. note: speak to Gert on it and it is a cat-back mod so in theory should not affect how the engine is run.
Just don't expect HP increase, we all know that cat-back performance gains are negligible , if any..... It is just louder everywhere and looks very discreet (ie stock). Of course, you get some droning at lower rpms.... it is not an active exhaust, and, your friendly OPC may not approve of it ( if they know).
In short PSE is better, because it is active but the Carnewal mod is quite compelling as well

I've had it done - brilliant mod. Cost €400 I think. Have a look at www.carnewal.comkhooni said:

You don't need to convince me about Xenons and PSE, I specced both on mine - must have options IMO

You're right about speed yellow, it looks fantastic on the R. I almost went for yellow, but then I would have had to stump up for PCCBs to get the calliper colour match
Speed Yellow is a very rare colour on the Cayman R though, since it kept disappearing from the configurator. All that said, I'm pretty sure that speed yellow car was part of the press fleet - I seem to remember hammering it around the Millbrook hill course at the SMMT day in May. Just not convinced I'd want to buy an ex-press car, even though I know they will have been serviced/maintained well.

Warranty issues ?Removing any part of the standard exhaust will affect back pressure and may also compromise emissions ?
