Anybody know how to effectively combat heartburn ? I don't just mean taking the odd heartburn tablet and hoping it goes away for the odd hour.

Seem to be getting it more and more and its very uncomfortable at night.

Is there a miracle cure like eating raw brocoli ? Slugs ? Snorting egg white up your nose ?

Cutting down on alcohol, losing weight, avoiding eating heavily late in the evening and avoiding stodgy foods for dinner such as potatoes and pastry ensures I don't get heartburn.

If however you already adhere to this, GP can prescribe stronger antacids such as Losec, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid production by about 90%. you can also get Zantac over the counter at pharmacist, not as strong as Losec but still very effective.

I had problems with acid reflux a year or two ago. I took some tablets prescribed by my GP, and then after three or four months the problem went away as mysteriously as it had arrived. No change in diet, exercise habits, weight etc. I'd recommend seeing your GP asap.

I'll admit thats its probably my diet, so i'm going to give up pasties and sausage rolls for a start. I'm not a bloater but have put on a couple of stone the last couple of years. Might have to cancel my subscription to CAMRA too frown

I've been on Omeprazole (Losec) since it was introduced, I have a dodgy gut muscle apparently. However, over the years, I've been told many things on how to reduce heartburn:

As above with weight, and diet. If you drink beer, stick to a mild not a bitter. If you suffer in the night, tilt your bed up at the head (5 degrees will make a difference).

Also you may want to research Helicobacter Pylori. They are bacteria in the gut that cause excess acid. A course of antacid (or proton pump inhibitors) can kill them and solve your problem.

If it persists though, I'd go see your GP.

Most supermarkets sell generic Ranitidine 75 off the shelf for around £1 for 12, it's the same drug as is in Zantac but Zantac costs over 3 times as much!

I had to give up real ale and now drink lager. Ale is a big no no for me.

See your GP.

I was put on Lansoprazole (30mg for first 4 weeks, 15mg thereafter) and they are fantastic.

I used to get it 3 or 4 times a day, now I don't have it at all and can eat whatever I like.

only thing with the proton pump inhibitor is it increases the chances of infection due to bacteria being unharmed in the stomach. also if you're getting it regularly you should have it checked by a GP as there may be something more serious going on.

Diet and Weight are the things that cause it for most people.....thinks like Coffee and Orange Juice are very bad for causing it.

If the OP has put on a couple of stone there's a good chance that losing weight will sort it...tilting the bed works too. Had to raise my wife's side of the bed when she was pregnant as that causes it to. OP you aren't up the duff are you biggrin

Lansoprasole here

Used to get it 3/4 times a day also and especially after drinking real Ale at night. Not had it since!

Brilliant!
