Cars With B&W Plates
Discussion
Aren't black and white number plates only legal on cars before 1972/1973? How come i've seen a Supra going around with these last year? Also a chap on the other thread posted this picture of a Merc, which is clearly newer than '73. Please could someone explain as this has been puzzling me for ages now!

Flouting/disregarding the law. Simple as that.

Yes, my hairdresser had a dodgy font but his plate has since been swapped to a normal one. If they are 'Flouting/disregarding the law' then how come the police don't catch them?See also mis-spaced plates and plates with dodgy fonts.

To quote the DVLA: "Vehicles constructed before 1.1.73 may display traditional style ‘black and white’ plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate."
So, anything other than a vehicle constructed before 1973 is breaking the law if they have black number plates.
Like i said, how come the cops don't catch them???? And what's the point anyway???? So, anything other than a vehicle constructed before 1973 is breaking the law if they have black number plates.
Oh, and welcome to PistonHeads!

They're pretty rare, so I wouldn't be surprised if many police officers don't actually know that they're illegal (they can't really be expected to know every law). The point is that people think they look better, I suppose.
