Lotus Exige R-GT rally car shakes down

Now this looks more interesting than a four-wheel-drive Skoda Fabia...

The car that might just make the face of rallying properly exciting again - the V6 Lotus Exige R-GT rally contender - has completed its first full shakedown test in Turin, Italy.

The car, which is now in its final rally spec, will take on selected Tarmac events in 2012 (understandably the rear-wheel-drive coupe is not going to be taking on the likes of Loeb and co. on gravel stages around the world).

First up will be the Monte Carlo rally in January, followed by the Tour de Corse and the Sanremo Rally.

"And as for the Rally car, when you consider that we've only began working on this car in July, I think what we've achieved in that time has been incredible. For me the Exige S makes the perfect GT rally car, it has an awesome 3.5-litre, supercharged engine, and we've managed to balance the weight perfectly to meet the minimum weight regulations," says Group Lotus Director of Motorsport, Claudio Berro. "The shakedown has only made us even more excited to show off the car in true race form early next year - I think we're doing the Lotus motorsport pedigree proud."

Tarmac is rubbish when it's small engined 4wd cars with an excess of grip. The GT cars they're using for tarmac rallies have got big engines, 2wd, and an excess of power. Much, much better.

Still compared to gravel/general loose surface rally it is no where near as good.

I have lost interest in rallying lately and yet it used to be my favourite motorsport!....however, ban the wrc cars, and bring in a Gt championship with this exige and Aston V8 etc etc and OMG....it would be perfect....rear drive ...proper noises....opposite lock....no driver aids....I can but dream!!!
Surely that would bring back the magic?

There already is a 'GT' class for RWD cars. The Aston pictured above takes part in it, alongside Porsche 911s and the like (seach youtube for Francois Delecour Porsche for some thrills!).

I thought new ruling meant competing cars had to use the 1.6 turbo engines?

Rally at the moment is a mess, I don't know where to see it on tv nor where to go if I wanted to stand there on the side of the road.... Regardless of the cars being dumbed down the grown ups responsible have let down Motorsport (other than F1) down badly... I know I could google and find out reality tv or itv 21 has it on at 3am on a Tuesday but these rally's use to be massive.....

Sounds like all the excuse I need to post the old favourite '911 GT3 rally sound' video!

WRC is on the brink of collapsing - and if the GT rally series gets off the ground it'll be the last nail in the coffin.

Why not make it 4WD and take on the Hot hatches?

And at least they registered on time! wink
