I'm out of ideas, currently have a mk2 Fabia vRS. I Love the DSG box with paddle shifters and the engines punchiness but the ride is terrible for 30k Miles PA. So have decided I'd like something thats a bit quieter on the motorway, and a smoother ride.

The budget is 13K and the car should:
Have a good autobox, leather, cruise, premium sound system such as dynaudio, bose sony etc.
Capable of 30pmg combined, so realistically looking at manufacturers figures of 36mpg + (Comp. fuel card)
Absolutely must be 0-60 in less than 8.5 sec. Preferably in the 7's and not below (22 YO so insurance is high)

I've been looking at a few VW EOS's, I can get a 09 2.0l DSG with absolute top spec for 11 - 12k but want to check out other options...

TIA

Give us a bit more to go on? Number of seats? Any maximum age limit? Is the auto box essential? Do you want practical or fun?

Octavia VRS Diesel with 12 speaker upgrade should just about cover most of your requirements.

Volvo S40 or S60 D5 Geartronic.

180bhp, 60 in around 8 seconds, 40mpg easily, comfier than a comfy thing, lots of toys and great stereos.

Min 2 seats, max 5 years, autobox essential, doesn't need to be practical - and not especialy fun it just needs to cope with long jouneys well, and have some gadgets to keep m entertained.

I'm liking the suggestions so far. I've had 4 days (600 miles) in an Skoda Octy and was very very impressed with the refinement, and with the seemingly solid build quality. The only thing is, I think the vRS badge along with a 2 litre engine will attract a very high insurance premium but I will look into it.

Passat is a bit too bland, I do like the honda's but IRC there isn't even a brisk Accord of current shape. I did peer into one the other day and the leather seats looked brilliant. I will investigate this and the Volvo's further. But the Eos is winning so far...

Maybe a little unusual for your age group but how about:http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201145427293526/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/13000/maximum-age/up_to_5_years_old/price-from/11000/model/5_series/make/bmw/keywords/535d/page/3/radius/1500/postcode/ox109qz?logcode=p

2008 535d, probably been to the moon and back, but you will not beat this for a motorway mile muncher! Around 36 mpg, and 6.4 to 60!

The 535d may be a little difficult to get one young enough to fit your budget with a low mileage, although there is an 06 with 40k within budget. For a motorway mile muncher I'd always go for a saloon, better driving dynamics and and acoustics IMHO.

Unfortunately anything that is 2 litres + is unviable due to insurance costs, there's nothing I'd love more than a x30d or Audi V6 Diesel. Though I've never had a diesel with more than 70bhp/ton, I kind of feel like I miss having something torquey...

Audi do a 2.0 tdi A3 with 170 that matches my current 0-60 time, so one of those with DSG and Bose could be good candidate if the Audi badge doesn't push the insurance up too much (It tends to at my age.)

I'd love it if Subaru did a slightly quicker diesel impreza as I like unpopular cars...

Any more suggestions?

I believe they do a good Legacy diesel? Not sure they do it with an auto box though...

And I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised by the insurance quote.

There is literaly nothing I would love more, but there's the insurance issue...
£3971.21 to insure that beast for me, which is a shame as it would suit my needs perfectly and I love the old school, low slung styling frown

A Petrol VRS will meet the criteria too (assuming it's available with the DSG) - we get about 28mpg around town and about 36 on the motorway, which should average well over 30 for someone doing 30k miles per year.

Do NOT get one with 18 inch wheels though. The ride is appalling.

I nearly test drove the Octy vRS after being so impressed with the standard curtousy ocatavia I had for a few days, but I got fed up with the dealership being sloppy - not stamping my log book after servicing ect. Maybe I should give one a go still though...

Checking out the insurance side of things on the Octavia vRS, the pretrol DSG would be £2606.46 which is £1400 more than I pay for my Fabia, which annoying matches the performanc frown But I may just stretch to that.

Shame about the 2.0 max, otherwise you could have had a Citroen C6 2.2HDI.
The most comfortable car on the market, stylish, well equipped and dead cheap!

I will check out the mondeos, IRC you can even get active cruise control on those which would be of interest. But I'm not too sure about having something so common...

I'll check out insurance on thr c6's, one of those would probabaly fit the bill.I've vb only ever seen 3 on the road and there is big apeal in that for me.
