I used to be a petrolhead :(
Discussion
I used to be possibly the biggest petrolhead known to man - Santa Pod for the muscle cars, F1, Rallying, hot hatches, muscle cars, supercars, you name it, i've had them.
Now, I have decided to plump for a Golf Bluemotion and I could have had a Golf GTi for the same price but I decided that all things considered I wanted the slower car!
1. It is slower and this for me was a positive - it means I have some chance of keeping to within the speed limit on those 30/40 roads and on motorways. This helps me keep my job and keep my licence so is now seen as a positive.
2. it uses less fuel (the primary consideration) which means nights out, cinema, nice restaurants and a good annual holiday can all be paid for via the savings - mean much more to me than spending on fuel now.
3. less chance of being stolen
4. less chance of being bothered about it or having boy racers after a race.
I know you may all now mock, feel free as I feel depressed actually WANTING a bluemotion over a GTI but that is how I feel in this new world that we enter.
I do have a nice car in the garage for those special days but to be honest I never feel like driving it.
Is this what getting older feels like?!
Just been reading Garlicks thread on his ls400 and his chimera and once i'd have lusted after those and the power of the tvr/the comfort of the ls400, now all I see is big bills, unreliability, potential loss of licence and misery spent fixing the car and hours at the filling station! Help me!!

TBH you sound like a lost cause. If I was you, I'd just move on and forget about it. Sounds like you've already made your mind up about whats important to you in life, and cars isn't it. Thats history now.
I see where you're coming from, and I sort of feel the same way in some respects, but if that ever happens to me, I'll be doing exactly what i suggested you should do, and just be forgetting about it and getting on with my life.
Sorry if that was the very unPH reply you weren't looking for

It's just midwinter blues, happens to me every year at this time where I think about trading in my nice toy for something more sensible but then summer arrives and I'm always glad I didn't!

perhaps its the weather, let's see if I itch for a petrol motor next year when the weather gets better, I hope so, don't want to be boring yet but can't help it

Hmm, been there and done that, sacrificing a car I loved for the woman I (thought I) loved, fuel economy and flat purchases. As it happened the woman wasn't worth it, the fuel saving was wiped out by maintenance costs on my 'sensible' car and the flat has bombed in value.
I'm slowly getting back onto the wagon of proper cars but I regret ever stepping off it in the first place.

I need more posts like this! although tbh the 'woman' is encouraging me to get a 'good' (petrol, fast, expensive) car!I'm slowly getting back onto the wagon of proper cars but I regret ever stepping off it in the first place.

I feel exactly the same way - I have been through so many greats, Integrale's, 911's, Elise, Ferrari - I just don't seem to be able to muster any interest in getting a proper sports car at the moment. I hope its just a phase I am going through - I put it down to getting older.
good car choices! love 'grales!Sorry but unless it was a Mk1 or 2 Golf GTi then you weren't a petrolhead anyway.
I can agree in theory about buying slower fun cars to keep your licence and would recommend:
MX5
MR2 Roadster
Smart Roadster
All of which would be cheaper to buy and run than your BlueMotion which if you'd done any research whatsoever you'd realise is actually an uneconomical bag of s
t.

had both a MK1 and a MK2 - this was a MK5 daily, which isn't bad like the mk3 or mk4 - the mk5 is a good motor, no?I can agree in theory about buying slower fun cars to keep your licence and would recommend:
