Inspired by reading the crash pics thread, and a pub chat yesterday..

If you borrow a car for a day, how do you drive it? I have a relative with interesting cars, every so often I get let loose with one, but I tend to drive a lot more conservatively than if it was my own car..

Meanwhile, in the crash pics thread, people borrowing their dads car bin it - then say its funny.

So PH, how do you treat a car (non hire car) thats not yours?

If its not mine then I'll drive it like would expect one of my cars to be driven. Hence my company car being in such good nick !

The exact same way I'd want others to treat my car should I ever entrust it to them: like their first born, only with more care...

The same as I drive my own car, which is relatively carefully.

Like my own ,less a bit. I treat my own cars well , mechanical sympathy and all that . Never rev hard from cold , no wheel spins or dumping the clutch a 4K rpm.

The few times I've driven any of my mate's cars hard is with them in the passenger seat , it's sort of expected.

bloody carefully. comes from moving clients cars, you look a total tit if you damage it and you have to pay for it.

the standard phrase was always to "nurse it", not least because something may be about to give out on it that even the owner doesn't know about.

ooh, i've just had a new thread idea...

Like my own, pretty much.
Unless instructed otherwise - when I drove my mates Supra reasonably quickly he was shouting at me to rag the nadgers off it...Same with another mates Skyline.

It's a big problem for me. I can't drive other peoples' cars. I'm just too paranoid about damaging them. On the very, very rare occasions that I have had a tootle in someone else's, I find I just can't relax and enjoy it.

I'm the same on test drives. I must be mental.

I must admit I try not to do it. FiL keeps trying to lend me his Range Rover and I keep refusing on the basis that should I have a fault accident I don't fancy coughing up £40k to replace it. Lots of members of my family quite happily swap, borrow, and lend cars to each other - I'm sure they don't truly understand the consequences should the worst happen and we're talking of cars up to £80k in value. When I have driven someone elses car I've treated it like my first born.

Borrowed a mate's 318iS years ago not having had much real world RWD experience. Tried to get back end out at all opportunities. Owner was much less mechanically sympathetic than me (rag it from cold etc) so figured he wouldn't mind wink

Then I'd drive it like my own or maybe better.

I've never yet, in 27 years, borrowed a car or bike.

Wouldn't dare.

Depends how they treat the car themselves to a large extent. But generally very carefully.

Though one person insisted i thrash the living cr@p out of anything he lent me.

He's on here too.
