Thinking about purchasing a Cayenne 4.5 - Any views??
Discussion
If you have lots of money Turbo.
If you have not so much cash but still want to go fast 4.5 V8
If you want a Porsche cayenne to ferry family 3.2 V6
I opted for 3.2, it was never going to match the 996 what ever I got & frankly in the city the 3.2 is more than enough, I also think the 3.2 missed the collant pipe issue.
If you need a big family car I can not think of anything better including 5 series estates ect ( remember the snow will come)
I got a 2004 V6 60K miles full OPC service for under £10k. Great car.

It depends on what you want to get from it. If you want economy then I would suggest looking elsewhere as none of the derivatives are going to be especially frugal.
If you want to go fast then a 4.5, if you want to go very fast shouting "Holy Moly" as you go then you need a Turbo.
I went for the Turbo, it makes me smile every time I get in it, I do look back as I walk away from it and frankly I cannot, and do not want to put a price on those feelings.
So for totally subjective reasons I would go Turbo every time.

I had a Cayenne 4.5 a few years ago....it was on PLG but was still mightily thirsty.....I have had many thirsty cars but the cayenne was on another level
I found the interior to be poor and outdated, and generally had little love for it.
It had a sports exhaust though which made it sound seriously mean!
I wouldn't touch another one unless it was the current shape

Great everyday cars, a pleasure to travel in but they are thirsty. If the idea of 500,600,700 quid a month in fuel troubles you then look elsewhere. On all town driving i often get just 200 miles from 91 litres / £120. I think thats prolly less than 10mpg. Youd possibly get better economy from a ferrari 599 !

and don't forget the way they go through tyres! I'm sure the OP has considered running costs though.I'd go for the 4.5/4.8 over the 3.2, as I'm sure there's not much difference in real world consumption figures. It's well over 2 tonnes and about as aerodynamic as a brick.
Hi all,
and thanks for the feedback. I already run a M3 for my daily hack, and a TVR Tuscan for my weekend fun, this is the wifes runaround, so not too bothered on fuel etc, just want a car big and safe enough for my 3 kids and pooch, and a decent car in the making, and the wife really likes the shape, so on that basis is there anyone (apart from AA etc) that you could identify that would perform an inspection on such a said vehicle, probably going to buy one in the next week.
Thanks again, and I am trying to persuade er indoors on the turbo, Ill keep trying

I was in the same situation as yourself almost. I have a tweaked VR4 Legnum as my daily hack and a V8 Cerbera for summer fun. I needed a big, safe and fast car for the wife and I initially lined up a Cayenne Turbo (circa 2005). In the end though I bought a 2007 300C SRT8 Touring. A very rare beast by all accounts and worth a look.and thanks for the feedback. Currently running a 56 Turbo S and it is absolutely amazing don't know what we are going to replace it with when the time comes, it will have to be a newer Turbo S or Panamera Turbo S.
Apart from the catastrophic thirst for oil and fuel it has been very good with the only problems being the well known coil pack issue and just last week the air suspension G sensor failing.
Also had a V6 back in 2005 was very basic spec , drove ok but it did seem very thirsty for a V6 not a massive difference from the V8.
So if you can get the S or Turbo then definitely go for it - also make sure they get a good blast every now and then ours is used mainly on the weekends and when left it does seem to run rough next time you get it in it
