Thanks for the gadget post. I really fancy having a go at this but have been a bit intimidated by the posts on here re complexity and cost.
Can any of the chefs or sous vide nuts comment on this gadget as to whether is is a practical bit of kit or will end up at the back of a cupboard as not fit for purpose?
Having looked at the Lakeland site I had a wander round for books on Amazon, one of which has a link to the Sous Vide Supreme manufacturer's website.
They have an offer on at the moment of £299 for the same demi model, a vacuum sealer and two cookbooks, or £249 for the machine alone.
And an edit here, though delivery over £50 of goods is free, blundering around the delivery page on the manufacturer's site mentions that VAT is not included in any of the prices on their product pages, this is not mentioned until you try to order the kit, which is a tad annoying.

Can't comment on the particular machine but in terms of whether or not sous vide is suitable for home then the answer is a definate yes. You're not going to use it every day or for everything but it can simplify complex dishes and allow you to prepare a lot in advance for special meals. If you cook a lot it's a fantastic bit of kit.
In my restaurant we use sous vide for a lot of things. Particularly confit duck, lamb rumps, chicken supremes and larger steaks (cote du beouf etc). Also for some dessert elements, fruits for example. We're starting to play around with sous vide vegetables but I'm not convinced on those just yet.

Thanks for the info Tony, most useful, I think I may well take a punt on this machine. In my restaurant we use sous vide for a lot of things. Just need to work out which currently redundant kit I can chuck out to make room for it
