Hi all, apologies as I am sure it has been covered before .

Mate and I would like to do a day and overnight at The Ring . Requirements are pretty simple:

1 Night
A day at the track with around half a dozen laps each
A day when it is quiet I.e. Not an open track
We want to hire a car- half decent one Clio cup or something - I will use my car for a lap but only to say 'I've done it'

So if anyone can help with web addresses, numbers and info it would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hotel - try the Hohe Acht, couple of miles from the ring, really quiet and reasonably priced. English speaking too. Stayed there twice this year when I did the ring (may and august) and wouldn't stay anywhere else now.

As for car rental, you could try www.rent4ring.de. Lots of different choices on their website.

If you want any more info, pm me I'd be happy to help.

You want to go but not during a normal tourist day? I presume you want a dedicated track day then but they are pretty rare and go for about £1000 I believe.

12 laps in a tourist day would be a tall order but it can be done if you are dedicated. Normally its the cool down time that's the problem as most cars have issues with consecutive laps (ie the tyres and brakes go off). You might be OK with a Clio though. Almost all tourist days are packed now when there's good weather and thin out when it gets cold and damp for obvious reasons.

12 laps in the Clio from RSR is about £800 I think, add Ferry, hotel, fuel and food onto that and you'll be looking about £1100-1200 total. £100 a lap.

Remember that although you would be insured in a rental, there is a large excess should you have an accident so be safe.

All thanks VM for replies & websites very useful . If anyone has any other personal views andxpeieces they are appreciated.

Private track day ideal but not at any cost - main objective is to put my car round a couple of times and then use a rental car for 4 laps (ish) each - if that's too many then no problem .

Thanks again

As has been stated above, it's not cheap but it is quite a thrill. As a starter for ten, I'd recommend reading Dale's website www.bridgetogantry.com which has some excellent beginners guides and cautionary tales. If you decide to take your car out, then bear in mind the likely cost of having an accident and consider insurance. It is expensive (very!) but you might decide it's worth it.

Once out there, the best advice is to not try to do too much too soon. It's harder than you think and there is a lot to remember, and a lot to catch you out (hands up who didn't nearly go straight on at Adenau Forest first time out! biggrin). Remember that you will be a bit maxed out to begin with, and there will be a lot of faster traffic out there, not all of whom will give you a wide berth. On my first lap, I saw everything from 996 Cup racers, to a London Taxi.

That said, when you get a quiet evening and a clear track, it's more like Green Heaven than Green Hell!

This month's PPC mag printed my story reviewing the different rental options at the 'ring. If you're too tight to buy a copy you can read it here, and there's a table comparing all the different options here.
Thanks for that link, I've already got the magazine but I'd not found s2b2 before and I'm now looking forward to an evening reading articles like the one I've already started now

Personally, unless you can afford to write it off, I wouldn't take your own car on the 'ring on a TF (a 20 minutes session on the GP circuit, if it's open, seems a safer option - run off). Dale who runs bridge to gantry mentioned above works for rent4ring and a few laps in one of his Swifts (or his MX-5 MK3.5 if it has been delivered yet) would be my choice, and stay at the 'ringhaus.

Have (safe) fun smile
Erm, have you checked the excess for even the most basic rent4ring car? If you were to crash their cheapest car (Suzuki Swift) and write it off then you are looking at a 2500 euro excess, then add 299 euro for hiring it, then the cost of recoverey and barrier repairs. Your probably not getting much change from £5k. Multiply that by many times for more expensive rental vehicles. Personally I'd rather take my chances in my own car which I'm more familiar with, and if the worst came to the worst I could simply write the cost of it off rather than having to find a huge excess.

Thanks for writing some great articles - really enjoyed reading them - you have some talent for that sort of thing.

The Norway one reminded me of when I sold a Senator 24V Manual (for parts he wanted) to a guy in Norway who met me at the newcastle ferry to take ownership - he was very concerned about the import tax so I gave him a receipt for a pittance, when he drove off the ferry the other side he got waved thro and never had to pay a penny.... He cut the shell up and kept all the parts he wanted (running gear)

I'd say a 1 night trip is too short, you will spend most of your time on the motorway driving there and back, there would be hardly any time to get any laps in!

If you're limited for time then i'd still suggest 2 nights. Maybe drive down on a friday in time for the evening session, these tend to be quieter than sat/sun so good for a beginner. Full day saturday then return on sunday.

Remember to check the track opening times before you book.

Just my opinion but it's a lot of money to spend on a 1 night visit.

Worth trying to go with people who have already been a few times.

Saves on wasting time with mistakes that regularly get made.

Have a look on Northloop.co.uk there are plenty of people who will offer advice and let you tag along on a trip.

I did a three day trip with my mate, we only did one day at the ring but we felt really fresh when we got there. It's a bit too much of a trek in a day to enjoy it really.

Drove over from Spa on 24th Dec,supposed to be open from 10 till two, they obviously forgot to tell ANYONE they fancied a day off!!!!!!!!!!!. Would agree,RSR is probably your best bet,all of the cars are in ultimate condition and ready to please, lot's to choose from, medium price try the Golf or its cousin, both excellent cars.
