My bros mate has inherited one and wants rid. All I know its a mk1 1.6 auto, 5doors, white and has had one owner from new, is in good nick, and has less than 30.000miles on the clock. What should I be offering him? Hard to get an idea as all the ones for sale have been 'dubbed'

Mileage isn't the be all and end all.

Whilst certainly a factor I'd be more concerned about present condition, history (Mots/VWSH etc)...

For a private sale I'd think nearer £2k than £3k. Being an auto and 5 door it's got to be fairly undesirable spec.

NO way is it worth 3-4 k .
It had too many doors , an auto and not a gti .
I really hope it's worth a lot but I do not think it is , sorry

Well I've got 2200cash so as close to that would be the better, I'm going to be spending money on it to make it my perfect car.. hidden soundsystem, real bbs wheels (not stretched tyres). Keep it quite standard but with a few bits to get it looking nice.

If the body is immaculate and it has every old MOT to verify the mileage, I'd say it's worth £2,000 as a private sale.

If there's nothing to verify the mileage, and it's full of dents and scratches, probably sub £500.

Colour, doors and engine/box all count against it unfortunately !

???? £2200.

Are you insane. I've been in the dub scene for 15 years (Glad to be out of it). I've had umpteen mk1 Gti's and all variants of watercooled dubs. It just saddens me that people are willing to pay such a large amount for these "scene" cars. I once payed £2400 for an absolutely mint mk1 gti in mars red with all the specs. That was too much but I got excited. They are very good cars, Very good. But only the GTi's. The rest are just bunk old 70's design shopping trolleys. Why would you pay over 2 grand for one???

Yes a few mint, low mileage mk1 GTi's go for very good money. But believe me, most get passed on for well under £2k. The base spec models, especialy 5 doors are worth £500 tops. The reason people pay big money is because they believe they're "cool". And I guess they once were. The problem is, By the time every other skater boy and surf dude realises they're cool and inflates the prices to these stupid highs. They are no longer "cool". They just represent a bunch of sad bds wanting to tick all the "scene" boxes.

For £2000 you can be much more unique and get a much much better car than a 5 door mk1 golf. Don't follow the crowd if your wanting to go custom. Just look around at what £2k will buy.

1.6 Auto?!

Condition is key but anywhere from £100 to £1500 tops.

Depends how clean and how much history could be worth quite a bit with one owner and low miles impossible to say with such a vague description.

£500'if it's a banger with an Mot
£3,000 plus if it cleans up to be a 'time warp' example

This i reckon. If its really clean surely its not worth much more than a grand.

ii know its a very vague description its not arrived at his house yet. It is definatly a one owner car and definatly got those miles. They are a well off family so I can imagine its been kept garaged. I'm going to be able to check it out next week I think.
So basically if its got a bunch of reciepts and is as new 1500-2000quid as a time warp?

500quid (walk away) if its abit of a rotter with no reciepts?

With regards to me following trends etc..

I'm not planning on slamming it, stretching tyres, bonnet bra'ing it and all that.

I'm going to keep it stock, as I'm going to hopefully keep it as a time warp car for a couple of years whilst I wait for my insurance to get way down and my wages to go up so I can get an Elise.

Only thing ill be changing are the wheels and keeping the old ones and maybe some other bits (grill, bumpers etc) if they've got faded and britle over the years.

Then hopefully get my money back in a couple of years.. Which I'm sure wouldn't happen if I bought anything modern with low insurance!

I wouldn't be buying it with the thought of getting your money back. Anything other than the GTI model is pretty much worthless and undesirable to most people. The fact that its a 5 door and a auto makes it even less undesirable to say a 3door manual.

It surely cant be worth any more than 1k tops regardless of condition.

Offer him £900 cash. It can't be worth more than a grand given it's undesirable spec.

You are mental. Plenty of decent cars out there for that money.

Nah, not worth much unless like new, you will soon get peed off with it as its slow, old and probably ropey, it isnt a GTI, and really, even they feel old a bit slow these days, what you want is, I reckon a 2.0 16v mk1 with all the mods to make it livable with, like proper brakes, not some old granny wagon. Two grand is madness, or should I say its £500 worth plus Scene tax.

Take a step back, have a think, and don't get fixated on it as I think you are lining yourself up for a disappointment.
