chimaera with 100k a complete no no?
Discussion
Ok forgive my ignorance on this as I come from a background of bmws where 100k is nothing on an engine if oil changes are kept regular, used to do mine every 6k. Theres a chim in the classifieds with 103k on the clock, and alledged fsh and outriggers replaced among other things. The car in question is priced right at the bottom of the market, but if all necessary work has been done is there any reason why the engine couldnt go for another 50k without any major rebuild needed? I have heard something about cams failing and damaging other parts but Id probably uprate the cam anyway.

Its not a bad price if everything stacks. Up mine has done well over 100k but did need a new cam, budget for a cam replacement and all's good. I would rather a well used car than a garage queen as you know its been working all its life or had any necessary work done to keep it road worthy, and for an 18 year old car its done an average of 5700 mile per year
Loadsa high mileage Range Rovers still going strong, you don't see them advertised with rebuilt engines, and those engines have had to pull alot more weight around....... If you go for it, it would be worth getting someone like V8Dev to do a healthcheck on the engine before you start replacing parts/modifying/uprating stuff....
Around 97k on mine.
Original cam, no nasties that I am aware of, usual maintenance stuff over the nearly 14 years ownership.
I don't / haven't (so far) had 90 percent of the issues / problems discussed in the forum.
That said, I have had most of the really common ones; door switch relay, 100 amp fuse, hot start fix.
Most of these dealt with years ago.
In my entirely amateur opinion, but also the opinion of many others; a well used but reasonably well cared for car will often be much more trouble free.
Regular use is better than high use and long term lay ups.
I wouldn't trade mine for a low mileage replacement, (though I fully understand the temptation).
As others have said, have it checked over. You probably should budget for some work over the first year as you sort any items that annoy you, that the previous owner may have become used to.
With a fsh, especially if it includes full TVR service list, should have caught anything worth worrying about.
It certainly has to be worth considering if you like the look, condition and price.

NAnut,
i wouldnt waste my time with the car you mention( if it is the one now for sale in durham).i actually won this car on ebay in the summer, when it was for sale in london. i spent less than 60 seconds looking at it before i got back in my car and left.
i do agree with the comments above, in fact my first chimaera had 85k on the clock when i owned it back in 2003, and was still the best performing tvr i have had.tho it is the only 4.3 i have owned. i suppose it comes down to personal preference.some people want low mileage and dealer history, some just want a car that has been looked after (whether a dealer or not). i recently bought a car that had been posted on here about earlier this year. most were saying that they wouldnt buy as had been cat d in 2002 and had no service history. there were no bills/service etc but it was plain to see a very recent full respray, new wheels, carpets, stainless manifolds, magnecors, mallory dizzy etc.. i traced the previous owner who told me everthing had gone thro his business which is why the bills/reciepts had not been passed on, and was more pleased to find out that he would send me copies, that including tornado chip, new clutch/master/slave and cam.The car had been stood in someones garage since 2002 and was rebuilt in late 2010. it was mot'd yesterday and failed only on the bulbs in the clear indicators not being replaced with amber ones, so im a very happy bunny for the pittance i paid for it.(alot less than the car in durham).
