The comments are equally as good. The Blackpool Gazette is basically the local Daily Fail of the Northwest.

Idiot, and the wrong way to go about it, but she is sort of right.

Speed bumps for instance are absolutly terrible for the environment, the car and the driver. It's not the same as 20mph, but it's another case where the government is trying to push 2 opposing agendas on us, both with an aim of restricting our lives.

There's very little difference in fuel economy between 20mph and 30mph in the cars that I've owned, and I suspect BMW wont be entirely happy with her saying that they've designed a car that will break if driven in third gear for prolonged periods.

She's got a point hasn't she?

The reply from the council is that driving at 20mph encourages a smoother driving style. How exactly? Most cars will be in 2nd gear at relatively high revs (creating noise & emissions), or 3rd barely ticking over (no flexibility, lots of gear changing). They go on to say that it won't affect many as "average speeds are relatively low" - so why bother then?

Typical council effort to appease idiots by wasting money...

What cars aren't completely comfortable at 20 in third?

Is that not a very odd design? Will it do 30 in fourth?

The other halves 1.2 Twingo, exactly the type of car that should be used for town driving. It won't pull 30 in 5th either which is roughly the same revs.

Fascinating... obviously a very different gearbox to everything I've driven then. (Almost) all the cars I've owned or driven have been geared to be happy in third at 20, fourth at 30, and fifth at 40; or there abouts. Why on earth did they put third that high? That's idiotic.

I suspect to meet some stupid emissions figure or economy figure for publication. It really bugs me when I'm driving it because I always have to be a gear lower than I expect. Like you, all other cars I drive (or have driven) with the exception of some very old or broken stuff works fine at 20mph in 3rd.

20 is less than half way through 1st in the 928.

Bet the residents love the rumbling and banging on the over run at that speed.

Bet increased noise, pollution and fuel useage isn't how they sell it to the locals when they are wasting all our money on that crap.

Yes, but at very low revs. It's a very long legged car, I believe they changed it from the earlier cars to improve economy.

TBH I do most of my 30-zone driving in 2nd or sometimes 3rd (complicated by the worn synchro on 2nd meaning I have to double-declutch from 3rd to 2nd).

The other cars I drive I am in 3rd in 30 limits. They'll do it in 4th, but the car wants to go faster IYSWIM, and I don't like the lack of flexibility of very low revs.
