987 Boxster /S engine issues?
Discussion
I have searched for buying advice but only seem to pull up info on the 986 Boxster and 996 3.4 911.
Can someone direct me to a thread that covers this? I am particularly interested to know if they suffer from the same IMS, RMS issues etc. I can then delete this post and we can all forget it ever existed.
For the record, I am looking at 5-6 year old cars.
Caveat
I get the fact it needs will need an official Porsche WARRANTY regardless of model, despite the fact that every car (20+ cars old and new)I may have owned has not needed one, nor have they had an engine failure. I also understand that it is a Porsche and that I should expect the engine to expire unless it has had a 111 point check at an OPC dealer, a full OPC service history, is less than two years old and or has a Porsche extended warranty!!!

Same potential IMS weakness on 2.7/3.2. Try and buy a 2006 model year as it should have the latest and larger single row IMS bearing so that could minimise risk. Avoid very low mileage, switch to 5w40 oil. Maybe check for any leaks in the area, NOT that this guarantee anything, just an indicator.
I feel that the 2.7 may be less of a risk as it needs higher revs which in turn may give better IMS lucrication.
The risk is very small, not that there are any stats available.
HTH.

Hartech's website will be a good place to start looking for info www.hartech.org
A 111 point inspection won't actually check the engine condition, although it will allow you to splash out on an OPC warranty. We just had a Boxster 2.7 prep'd and the first thing I did was get the engine internally inspected with a boroscope - only when it was given the all clear did I then get all the other stuff done (spark plugs, coil packs, clutch, RMS and IMS seals, new gear linkage cables etc etc). We cover the car for 3 months after which it's eligible for OPC cover (and has effectively already passed a more stringent check than the 111 point check). There will be cars at plenty of specialists that the same applies to (although not all will have had the internal inspection).
