I have recently been looking at Mercedes CL600's, which seem to be superb value for money. I have constructed a list of equipment and a specification to show you how good this car is..... How can a car which can be bought for less than 10K have this much equipment and performance? On Top Gear, Clarkson says that if you bought the equivalent of this car today, it would cost you £110,000. £110,000!!!!

And if you've bought 'Evo - Car Of The Year', turn to page 149 for a 2004 CL600 in the Just Looking section.

CL600 Equipment List:

Alloy Wheels
Central Locking
Champagne Fridge
Climate Control
Cruise Control
Electric Door Closing
Electric Boot Opening
Electric Sunroof
Electric Adjustable Seats
Headlight Washers
Heated Door Mirrors
Heated Seats
Leather Trim
Massaging Seats
Parking Sensors
Sat-Nav
Telephone
Television
Traction Control
Trip Computer

Specification.....

Engine: 5.5 V12
Bhp: 493
0-60: 4.9 Secs
Top Speed: 155Mph (194Mph Unrestricted)

Didn't Clarkson's go expensively wrong about a week after the program?

I seem to remember something about coil packs and a big bill.

It was posted on here a while back but I don't expect the search is working.

Oh yes I forgot - the world is now defined by Top Gear.

I'm reckoning the estimate for the coil pack fault on the TG Merc was from a dealer.

Same sort of thinking that evaluates the cost of replacing the wipers on my car at about £70 (including labour).

When I had a Laguna II I called the parts department at a Renault dealer for a price for front wiper blades - £57.50 to supply only yikes

It was £1200 from a main dealer to fix /rePlace all 12 coil packs....

Yes, coil pack can happen to anyone. These are tremendous value as long as any potential owner remembers:

1: A car costing upwards of £80k originally will always have high maintenance costs
2: Fuelling it will be crippling unless you are loaded, or just use as a weekend car

I love things like this and high powered barges, so if I could, would leap in with both feet and perhaps just get a warranty direct type warranty for the first year of my ownership.

£100 each isn't terrible is it? How much do they cost for a 1.6 Renault Megane ? (which probably goes through them more often)

At a cost of £1200? and that was for only one bank of cylinders. I doubt that most cars have £2.5k worth of coil pack under the bonnet!

Edit - I thought it was only one bank that went, anyway - still a serious amount of cash!

I still don't understand how 6 coil packs can fail all at the same time or is it a case of one failing and the whole bank is scrap?

The 600 is notorious for it if the merc forums are anything to go by, certainly in comparison to the 500.

So they say.

I had a coil pack failure followed by another 500 miles later and then another 600 miles after that.Thereafter renewed the lot at £38.00 each, but was advised that I should also change the plugs as worn plugs can accelerate coil pack failure.

All in all, about £450.00 plus Gestapo tax

Central locking too. That is the sort of spec dreams are made of.

Scratch that.

Originally had a n/a V12 with 367bhp, replaced with a twin turbo one.

Exactly. Spares and repairs budget should always be based on the cost a car when it was new, not what you paid for it. Many of these cars can be bought for Fiesta money but they can't be run for Fiesta money.
