So, I'm thinking that as and when the 991 GT3 is available the transmission options will either be PDK or the not so raved about 7 speed manual.
Could this be a big mistake and therefore a good thing for 997 GT3 in terms of long term desirability??

imo yes if porsche goes for a gt3 with pdk gearbox only, then it would def have a good effect on both 996 & 997 gt3 desirability! I personally would never want a gt3 with a pdk gearbox but the more i read about the new 7speed manual the more i think porche will fit the pdk to the 991gt3, but you never know they might come up with something completely different, but money talks so i doubt it!

PDK is Inevitable I recon but a manual box will also have to be an option but in view of low C02 emission laws its likely to be 7 gears.

For all those reasons I think the 997 gt3 is a smart long term bet.

I agree don`t think the gt3s low volume sales would effect porsches CO2 averages. But money talks and i can´t see porsche designing a completely new box for the gt3 or using the old one either! They might go to a sequential box but again cost plus warranty issues i could´t see this happening either, i think it will be PDK or 7speed manual, which in my view is a shame. As for 997 gt3 prices might help them hold up a bit but they´re still gonna drop (Not massively).

Not a chance. Just wouldn't work. I've not driven a 7 cup, but have been in one, and it was awful manoeuvring it in the pits. Totally not going to work on a road car!

Agree - but would go for the 997.2 version. Much better. 997.1 GT3 is a cracking road car but lost some of the 996 GT3 magic on track.

I have to assume there will be some heavy leaning on the fact that the race cars use sequential to introduce the PDK to the GT3, im sure in usual porsche style there will even be sufficiently foggy wording used to leave folks thinking it might even be the same thing (as they often do these days, the gulf between cup and GT3 is wider now than porsche wants to admit) but as for that box actually crossing over. No chance.
It's entirely unsuitable on so many levels. Cost, longevity, operation and I say that as a cup owner.

Manual gearboxes and performance cars are now out of step. Progress has moved too far. The big question for the new GT3 is what's the engine?Everything else pales

Why is the 7 speed manual a bad gearbox? I haven't heard any bad reports?

Agreed the single clutch flat shift sequential is not a realistic road option. A twin clutch option is the only realistic way to go if you must do away with a manual box. The flat shift race box would cause all sorts of problems from an operational and maintainance point of view. Also you need to know what you are doing to use one as it's not easy to use properly especially on downshifts. Having seen boxes regularly written off by experienced guest racing drivers in the carrera Cup VIP car, christ knows what would happen if porsche let the motoring press loose with it. Mind you it might kill a few Journo's and do us all a favour.

I think that the engine will be based on the next generation RSR unit, which i suspect will be the basis of the 991 cup engine. Should be a good lump. it needs to be because it will be replacing a very good one indeed.

I struggle to believe that. How on earth could you make a manual box out one with two clutches?

I agree, raced them for two years and they were not brilliant even as sequential race boxes go; heavy shift, noisy, high maintenance and a propensity to go bang with mega expensive results...

Read this month's Total 911. Guy didn't like the huge push to reach 7th and also said it was easy to get the wrong gear, IIRC.

Yes, but could they not be 'adjusted' for fast road work? I think so.

can you clarify "adjusted" and share that thinking with us all perhaps?
