So like an idiot I thought yer ill drive to Soho on the way back from kent based nye celebrations as I was running late and it was "on the way" to home in Putney. Bound to be quiet as its new years day... who organised a sodding parade with resulting road closures and mild chaos. In a bit of frustration I misjudged a corner clipped rear Tyre and tore it. So an eagle f1 is the first motoring expense 12 hours into 2012.

Anyone else or is 2012 just doomed for me?

Car will be in garage later today (320d N47) for an oil and filter change and then tomorrow I'm whipping the intake manifold and EGR valve off for a general inspection and clean.

So suppose you could class the oil and filter as first costs, although I did buy it all last week!

I'm buying a stter for work today, so that's the first of my costs for the year. Let's hope it's not as much of a heap as I expect a £500 Bora to be.

Noticed a 2 foot long crack in the windscreen last night. I wonder what my windscreen insurance excess is?

Finding out why my MX5 is running rich, has a very erratic idle and misfiring constantly. Then I need to get the sills in the garage fitted, though that can wait till the worst of Winter is over.

5L of Millers Competition Gear Oil for £55! Bargain. Apart from the fact it will sit in the garage until I can be bothered to change it!

Mine threw an electrical wobbler last night, had to be jump started. Looks like I'll be buying a new battery tomorrow, as a matter of course. VED is due end of Jan too. <grr>

New years morning, GF went to move her car off the street so she wouldn't get a ticket staying at her friends for NYE. Car wouldn't start. Called the RAC, and it looks like the cams have jumped tooths on the timing chain (known problem on the VW 1.2 3cyl engine, in a Seat Ibiza). I miss out on my lay in, and fry up breakfast as RAC towed the car 70 miles home. He is a good bloke, and we chat the way there about cars and bikes, stopping for a coffee along the way.

Now I have to decide if I am going to fix the engine (150+ miles on it, using oil, so any fix is just going to keep it running for the short term), or she replaces it (not a good time for this as she left her job, and trying to build up private work, so no regular income yet). She needs a car for work.

3 series E46 petrol models seem to be cheap 2nd hand, and run it for 6 months, and flog it off? I like the idea of a Civic Type R, for about 3k, and keep it longer for a bit of fun.

No problem! Just need to decide what to do now! I don't want to get another and start chasing rust again!

Don't know if this was past tense and already fixed but I had that recently on one of my cars (not an MX5) and it was the throttle potentiometer. 2 minute fix

Not had a chance to drive the car since before christmas as I was away skiing or feeling festive(ie. drunk) for prolonged periods. Wouldn't surprise me if my first motoring cost this year will be a new battery therefore hehe

I know everything points to the coil pack, but try your exhaust lambda sensor first.

I replaced everything on mine, coil pack, leads, plugs, o2, then coil pack again. Turned out to be the £5 lambda sensor.

Actually follow andy-xr's advice first, then mine.

Most likely to be 60 or 75 quid.

Some are still 50 and there are a few at 100.

Some of the newer policies are set at 175 but still rare.
